Physical Planning, Development & Operations (PPDO) manages and oversees all University activities and services related to physical and environmental planning, design and construction, engineering, physical plant maintenance and operations, capital planning and space management, and the associated business services necessary to support these functions. JOB SUMMARY

Under the supervision and direction of the Electrical Shop Supervisor, the incumbent performs maintenance, repair, and construction on campus electrical distribution systems, interior/exterior lighting circuitry, electro-mechanical equipment, and appliances. 

 

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $45.22/hour. Upon successfully completing the 6 month probation period, there is a salary increase from Step 1.0 ($45.22/Hourly) to Step 2.0 ($50.25/Hourly.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

45% - Journeyman-Level Electrical Work
 

  • Perform the duties of a journeyman-level electrician on all campus buildings.
  • Perform repair, and electrical construction duties, such as repair and/or installing electrical distribution of building, street, and path lighting including all associated circuits, circuit appliances, electrical conduit, electrical panels, wire molding, and other wiring devices- such as circuit breakers, bus ducts, kitchen appliances, safety switches, lighting contactors, motor controllers, etc.- with voltages up to and including 12KV. This involves the proper use of diagnostic instruments such as infrared scanners, megger, Volt-Ohm meters, ammeters, circuit tracers, and other voltage potential detection devices.
  • Install breakers, lugs, new conductors, and conduit connectors in, on, or above energized busses. Work involves reference to and uses of manufacturer's service manuals and specifications.
  • Perform circuit load calculations, voltage drop, and conduit fill calculations.
  • Perform estimates and project support including plan review.


40% - General Preventive Maintenance & Troubleshooting
 

  • Perform preventive maintenance and repair of electrical motors, controls, motor control centers, building lighting systems, electrical panels, circuit breakers, fusible disconnects, emergency generators, building elevators, dumbwaiters, rotating machinery, various kitchen equipment, street and path lighting, control relays, standby lighting systems and other equipment as assigned including all associated circuits and circuit appliances.
  • Performs troubleshooting by diagnosing electrical shorts, open circuits, and low and high-resistance circuits. This will be performed by oral or written instructions using architectural drawings, sketches, and/or electrical blueprints and material lists.


10% - 12KV Preventive Maintenance
 

  • Perform preventive maintenance and assist in repairs of 12KV distribution systems consisting of 12KV and AC circuits, and co-generation systems.


5% - Safety & Inspection
 

  • Perform safety inspections and routine maintenance on tools and equipment used.
  • Attend safety and training classes and perform job-related tasks in a safe manner.
  • Follow all product and University-specific safety procedures when using tools and PPE selection. Writes and maintains a daily timesheet.
  • Effectively employ good interpersonal skills when interacting with members of the campus community.
  • Help Physical Plant mechanics and supervisor maintain an inventory of shop materials, supplies, and tools by informing them of specific needs.
  • Respond to campus electrical outage callouts after normal hours, weekends, and holidays. Perform other related duties, as assigned by the Electric Shop Supervisor and Sr. Superintendent.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience and/or skills in using applicable circuit testing equipment, diagnostic instruments, infrared scanners, and electrical appliances.
  • Experience and/or skills equivalent to qualification of a journey level electrician.
  • Ability to maintain, and troubleshoot building electrical systems, including lighting systems, power systems, power control systems, power control circuits, and electrical appliances.
  • Understanding of, and willingness to comply with, electrical and work procedures and requirements including National Electrical Code & CAL-OSHA Standards.
  • Willingness to be trained in maintaining and troubleshooting a wide variety of electrical specialties such as Elevators, VFDs, electric gate operators, generators, and Photovoltaic systems.
  • Understanding of, and willingness to comply with, electrical safety work procedures and requirements from NFPA 70E, IEEE, NETA, and ANSI.
  • Ability to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair, electrical wiring, electrical panels, and other electrical devices such as lighting fixtures and circuits, standby generator systems, standby lighting systems, bus ducts, circuit breakers, control relays, etc.
  • Ability to bend conduit and install complete conduit systems.
  • Ability to read, write, and follow oral and written instructions, and perform mathematical computations required in the electrical trade.
  • Ability to layout work from architectural drawings, and sketches, create blueprints and materials lists, and place orders for materials.
  • Knowledge of the NEC, CEC, OSHA Safety Regulations, and NFPA 70E procedures.
  • Knowledge of electrical theory, AC and DC, OHMS law, series and parallel circuits, inductance capacitance, magnetism, power factor, transformers, relays, and other electrical devices.
  • Knowledge in the use of electrical service manuals.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills sufficient to interact and work effectively with co-workers and the members of the campus community.

 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to operationalize and incorporate the concepts of sustainability into daily work efforts.
  • California Dept of Industrial Relations General electrician certification or equivalent level of knowledge (minimum of 4-5 years of work experience).

 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California.
  • Ability to do occasional work in confined spaces such as attics and trenches while bending, stooping and/or kneeling with the possibility of being exposed to live electrical circuits and machinery.
  • The ability to ascend/descend ladders with or without accommodation.
  • Ability to sustain exposure to dusty, noisy environments and inclement weather as necessary to carry out assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • Ability to safely perform the physical requirements necessary to move light to moderate objects up to 60 lbs., with or without accommodation.
  • Ability to work a variable schedule.
  • Ability to work a variable schedule including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies after hours as necessary.
  • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
