Electrical Technician

The Data Science and Systems Integration (DSSI) Program of the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) is looking for a qualified electrical technician. In this role, you will be working collaboratively with scientific, engineering, and other technical staff to enable continued operations and expand experimental capabilities of our 30 state-of-the-art synchrotron beamlines and cryo-electron microscopy facility. The NSLS-II offers the working environment of a large-scale scientific facility, which combines the scope of a large industrial facility with the excitement and challenges of world-class research experiments. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

An electrical technician is sought to support scientific and technical staff in the NSLS-II scientific environment. In this role, you will participate in fabrication, assembly, testing, installation, and documentation of electronic and electrical equipment as part of directed projects and operational efforts. High quality and efficient work is expected, as well as effective and respectful communication within and between diverse teams.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Terminate, test, and troubleshoot low-voltage cabling for instrumentation signals and controls
• Support installations for operating beamlines, lab prototypes, and new beamline construction
• Support electrical and electro-mechanical efforts of coordinating scientific and technical groups
• Maintain and adhere to documented methods and materials standards
• Maintain on-hand availability of common materials and tools
• Design, document, and construct simple electrical solutions for controls and instrumentation
• Participation in technical evaluation of proposed materials and methods
• Maintain electrical safety

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• High school diploma or equivalent plus:
o Technical institute or Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program
completion at BNL, or
o Technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 1 year relevant work experience, or
o 2 years relevant work experience
• Knowledge of common cable termination and testing tools and methods
• Knowledge of standard and best-practices in tooling, methods and materials for low-voltage signal and controls cabling preparation and testing
• Ability to locate and work from procedures, drawings, electrical schematics, user manuals and verbal  instructions
• Ability to work independently and in small teams
• Effective interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with a diverse group of scientists, engineers, technicians, vendors/contractors and safety representatives

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• High school diploma or equivalent plus:
o Technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 2 years experience, or
o Technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 3 years relevant work experience, or
o 4 years relevant work experience
• Experience with lift equipment
• Experience related to electronic controls for any of the following:
o motion / motors
o temperature controllers / sensors
o cryogenic or water-cooling systems
o vacuum / UHV systems
o low/high pressure gas systems
o scientific data acquisition
• Experience developing and executing cable routing and management plans
• Experience working with contractors performing electrical work
• Experience developing work plans and maintenance schedules

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. This is a multi-level role and the full salary range for this position is $49556 - $85540 / year. You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience.  Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
