Position Overview
This position designs, plans, supervises and performs industrial electrical, electronic, and safety system installations and repair work. The position enforces codes and ordinances governing all electrical work and inspects all electrical construction installations and repair work performed at the University of Idaho for compliance.
This is an essential position that may be called upon in the event of an emergency and/or university closure.
Duties may include:
  • Manage activities related to the procurement, construction, operation and maintenance of electrical and safety systems
  • Hire, train and manage employees
  • Prepare reports and maintain work records
  • Order and maintain parts inventory for electrical shop
  • Create and manage work orders for the electrical shop
  • Perform work as a journeyman electrician as needed
  • Serve on a weekend call-out rotation
  • Other duties as assigned

Position Qualifications


Required Experience
  • Five years as a journeyman electrician
  • Four years supervising, providing instruction, participating in or leading a team, or delegating work to others
  • Experience with legal procedures related to enforcement of electrical codes and ordinances
  • Using supervisory practices and training methods
  • Operating computer programs to enter data and create spreadsheets

  • None
Required Other
  • Possess an Idaho Journeyman Electrician’s license or be able to acquire one within twelve months of hire
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and be able to meet policy requirements for driving university-owned vehicles
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Ability to respond to emergency calls within 30 minutes and serve on weekend call-out duty on a regular rotation
Additional Preferred
  • Ability to operate a boom truck, line truck and forklift
  • Demonstrated knowledge of construction, installation and repair practices in electrical work and in electric and electronic fire prevention and detection systems
  • Experience planning, installing, and maintaining all phases of electrical work relating to building construction and equipment repair
  • Experience performing commercial and industrial electrical installations
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
  • Must be able to:
    • Bend, stoop and work in awkward positions for several hours at a time
    • Climb and work from ladders, scaffolding and scissor lifts
    • Carry, lift or otherwise move items weighing up to 50 pounds
    • Work in confined spaces using equipment and appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
    • Work in inclement weather conditions
    • Participate in a medical surveillance program and respirator fit test
