Job Description

The Southwest Advanced Prototyping (SWAP) Hub is expanding quickly and hiring an Electrical Engineer, CMOS +X. Funded by the CHIPS Act, SWAP Hub is dedicated to revolutionizing semiconductor manufacturing for CMOS+X applications. At the core of our research direction is the development of atomically thin semiconductors on wafer scales ranging from 200mm to 400mm. Collaborating with   public and private enterprises, SWAP Hub is leading cutting-edge research in emergent semiconductor materials and processes and propelling these technologies into the next century.

Essential Duties

As an Electrical Engineer, CMOS + X, you will play a pivotal role in our research and development initiatives. Your responsibilities will include:

Advanced Materials Manufacturing:

  • Operating and optimizing state-of-the-art semiconductor deposition systems such as:
    • Plasma-Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD)
    • Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD)
    • Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) and
    • Metal-Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD) to fabricate high-quality semiconductor materials
  • Materials Characterization:
    • Employing a diverse array of metrology tools including:
    • X-ray Diffraction (XRD)
    • Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)
    • Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS)
    • Raman Spectroscopy
    • Photoluminescence (PL) and
    • Related techniques to analyze the structural, optical, and electrical properties of semiconductor materials
  • Collaborating closely with the complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) integration team to ensure seamless integration of developed semiconductor materials into CMOS devices.
  • Process Optimization:
    • Contributing to process optimization efforts aimed at enhancing the performance, yield, and scalability of semiconductor manufacturing processes.
    • Documentation and Reporting:
    • Maintaining detailed records of experimental procedures, results, and observations. Preparing technical reports, presentations, and documentation to communicate findings to internal stakeholders and external partners.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field AND seven (7) years of related engineering experience, which includes two (2) years of lead or supervisory experience; OR, nine (9) years of electrical engineering or related experience, which includes seven (7) years of professional level electrical experience, which includes two (2) years of lead or supervisory experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. Possession of, or ability to obtain within six months, a certificate of registration as a professional engineer with proficiency in Electrical Engineering with registration in the state of Arizona.  Employee must possess a valid US Drivers license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment.


Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a Master’s degree or higher in Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, or a related field.
  • Proven hands-on experience in semiconductor manufacturing processes and equipment operation.
  • Proficiency in utilizing metrology tools for materials characterization and analysis.
  • Disposition to interface with lab customers (students, staff, faculty, and external entities) as appropriate
  • Ability to work well in a team and to operate independently when needed
  • Experience in using written/verbal communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills
  • Experience in being detail oriented, flexible, and self-motivated
  • Experience in using troubleshooting skills

Working Environment

  • This is a first shift position 0800-1700, Monday-Friday. Occasional off shift work may be required to manage emergencies
  • Regular activities require ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks at one time, manage conflict, work well in a team environment and operate independently, and communicate effectively to exchange accurate information
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts
  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office and laboratory settings subject to extended periods of being in a stationary position, walking moderate distances to perform work functions, and operating computer and other office productivity machinery
  • For the class 100/1000 cleanroom space, it will be necessary to wear personal protective equipment including long pants, closed-toed shoes, shoe covers, a lab coat or cleanroom suit, gloves, and safety glasses
  • Some activities will entail the need for frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to clearly communicate and exchange accurate information to perform essential duties
