Summary:

The Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator I, under direct supervision, assists in the management of the environmental health and safety program. The position coordinates within the full spectrum from preventative mitigation to assessment reporting as well as other related activities (ie: training and after-hours emergency response). The position supports all aspects of a full-service EHS program to ensure a safe, healthy and comfortable work environment for employees and visitors. The position adheres to requirements to ensure compliance with applicable Federal, State, and local regulatory agencies, as well as System and A&M-Commerce policies and regulations.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Conducts regular inspections/audits of facilities including general, laboratories, SPCC and grounds and ensures compliance. Provides technical expertise regarding hazard evaluations, recommendations, and follow-ups to ensure correction of related violations, inadequacies, objectives, programs, etc.
  • Promotes and raises awareness across campus of the impact of emerging environmental issues.
  • Ensures related equipment is maintained, tested, and inspected and that any mandated inspections are scheduled and accomplished on time.
  • Maintains current knowledge of applicable laws and requirements and complies with regulatory agencies and national guidelines such as, but not limited to, Texas Department of Health (TDH), National Fire Protections Association (NFPA), Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).  Provides support for the liaison relationship with varied regulatory agencies.
  • Performs and assists in the investigation of injury incidents that occur to employees, students, and visitors; administering preventive remedies to mitigate recurrence and ensure campus safety. Relays necessary information to risk management and insurance departments.
  • Monitors departmental daily safety checks in all university laboratories and works with the university lab coordinators to ensure continuous compliance.
  • Communicates to the university Safety Committee, Institutional Bio-safety Committee, and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) any significant problems or violations of various agency guidelines.
  • Assists with and monitor all comprehensive programs related to hazardous chemicals including storage and disposal of hazardous, laboratory, and universal waste and products.
  • Trains and/or provides guidance for appropriate safety training of personnel across the university.
  • Assists in emergency situations.
  • Oversees the management and inspections of Evacuation chairs, automated external defibrillators (AED) and First Aid cabinets.
  • Assists in the coordination, planning, and safety oversight of events and/or projects.
  • Serves on university committees as needed.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS (EHS Coordinator I)

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health and Safety or related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience / Knowledge / Skills: Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications. Knowledge of environmental health & safety rules, regulations, and standards.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS (EHS Coordinator II)

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health and Safety or related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience / Knowledge / Skills: Two (2) years related experience in a related field. Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications. Knowledge of environmental health & safety rules, regulations, and standards.

  • Other Requirements: May respond to emergency situations during or after hours. All positions are security-sensitive.


PREFERRED EDUCATION / SKILLS/ EXPERIENCE:

Experience in environmental health & safety. Experience in laboratory safety.
