The Department of Engineering Education (https://eed.osu.edu/ ; EED) at The Ohio State University invites applications for two regular tenure-track faculty appointments starting at the associate level, in the area of engineering education.

Position Overview

We invite applications for two tenure-track, associate professor positions to start August 2024. This unique opportunity aims to grow EED’s tenure-track/tenured faculty through the addition of established scholars and leaders who bring unique prior academic experiences gained through non-tenure-track roles. The associate professors would be expected to have existing, externally funded research in engineering education. They will be given a four year tenure-track timeline where they must demonstrate an ability to obtain continued external funding to support their research, mentor and engage with graduate students within the engineering education Ph.D. program, teach courses offered by the department, provide academic leadership, and engage in service to internal and external communities . Prior demonstrated administrative leadership experience, either at the department or college level, is desired.

The position is open to applicants who may require sponsorship for a visa or other work authorization.

Performance Objectives

Candidates will be given a four year timeline to make substantive achievements in scholarship, teaching, and service. Continued progress should be made over the duration of the pre-tenure timeline to demonstrate potential to become a distinguished scholar and recognized leader in engineering education, provide evidence of being an effective teacher in the classroom and advisor outside the

classroom, and provide high quality service to the university and the broader engineering education community.

Education and Experience Requirements

Required :

  • Ph.D. in engineering, engineering education, or equivalent STEM field from an accredited institution of higher education
  • Research with the potential for scholarly impact, innovation, and collaboration
  • Evidence of research productivity, funding, and graduate student support
  • Potential to publish innovative and influential engineering education research in top tier outlets 
  • Experience using evidence-based practices in higher education settings to increase recruitment and retention of undergraduate and/or graduate students
  • Embrace development of open-minded exploration among learners
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity and promoting an inclusive and equitable organizational climate
  • Potential to be a conscientious university community member and contributor to the broader engineering education community
  • Ability to attract and mentor graduate students from diverse backgrounds and lived experiences
  • A minimum of 6 years work experience in academia as a non-tenure-track faculty member
  • Demonstrated efforts in research, teaching, and/or outreach and engagement that reflect Ohio State’s Shared Values

Desired :

  • Demonstrated expertise in the use of reflective and student-centered pedagogical practices
  • Potential to embrace the development of open-minded exploration among learners
  • Evidence of successful collaboration with others, including but not limited to staff, students, instructors, and faculty members from different disciplines
  • Interest in actively engaging with other College of Engineering departments and colleges across The Ohio State University   
  • Ability to teach and supervise undergraduate students in an inclusive way (all learners are valued and feel a sense of belonging)
  • Demonstrated leadership, in particular prior administrative leadership experience

Department Information

The Department of Engineering Education (EED) is located within the College of Engineering at The Ohio State University. The EED’s mission includes advancing the engineering profession and enabling student success by:

  • Conducting and propagating world-class scholarship in engineering education
  • Modeling and advocating scholarly, evidence-based teaching within the College of Engineering
  • Developing and delivering state-of-the-art, innovative, multidisciplinary courses and programs in first-year engineering, engineering technical communication, multidisciplinary capstone design, and graduate education in engineering education.

The EED was created in November 2015 and the Ph.D. program was approved in Spring 2018. In Autumn 2023, approximately 25 graduate students will be enrolled in the engineering education doctoral program. Looking towards the future, the EED is positioned to grow and establish stronger connections across the College of Engineering and the field.
