EDUCATOR PATIENT

Position Summary:

Seeking a Per Diem Patient Educator. Must be Bilingual English/Spanish.


Design and conduct educational training for patients at UNM Hospitals and the community. Serve as a resource person for patients and staff. Collaborate with physicians, department managers and staff regarding patient education needs. Ensure adherence to Hospitals and departmental policies and procedures. Patient care assignment may include pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric age groups.
Accountability:
  • PROGRAMS - Develop, implement and evaluate educational programs based on needs assessments, physicians, departmental requests and hospital administration

  • CURRICULUM - Work with department managers and physicians to develop curriculum tailored to the needs of that department and patient population as directed by supervisor

  • SCHEDULE - Develop training schedules; schedule trainers

  • PATIENT EDUCATION - Provide direct patient education for groups and individuals

  • RESOURCES - Develop, collect and maintain programs, resources and materials (literature, videos, pamphlets and other media) to provide patients with education and self-education on their medical conditions in compliance with applicable current standards

  • DOCUMENTATION - Maintain program documentation

  • THERAPY - Registered Dietitian Educator: provide nutritional diagnostic therapy (MNT), DSMT and counseling services for disease management in compliance with National standards (American Diabetes Assoc., Medicare, American Dietetic Assoc., etc.)

  • DIETITIAN - Registered Dietitian Educator may act as a Registered Dietitian in the Diabetes Education Program as well as provide one-to-one maintenance services as assigned

  • EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES - Ensure proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies

  • PATIENT SAFETY 1 - Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures and protocols

  • PATIENT SAFETY 2 - Demonstrate proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve patient safety through questioning of current policies and processes

  • PATIENT SAFETY 3 - Identify and report/correct environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue risk

  • PATIENT SAFETY 4 - Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors and/or near misses in a timely manner

  • PATIENT SAFETY 5 - Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatment or situations that they don't understand or may "not seem right"

  • DEVELOPMENT - Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-services, meetings and workshops

  • Education Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline

  • Experience Requirements:
  • 1 year directly related experience

  • Licensure/Certification Requirements:
  • CPR Certification for Healthcare/BLS Providers or for Professional Rescuers or must obtain within 30 calendar days of date of position

  • Education Requirements - Preferred:
  • Master's Degree in related discipline

  • Experience Requirements - Preferred:
  • Bilingual English/Spanish

  • Bilingual English/Keres, Tewa, Tiwa, Towa, Zuni, or Navajo

  • 2 years directly related experience

  • Physical Demands Requirements:
  • Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly (Constantly: activity or condition exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. May require walking or standing to a significant degree or requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or may require working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of materials is negligible.

  • Licensure/Certification Requirements - Preferred:
  • Registered Dietitian, Licensed Dietitian, or Licensed Nutritionist in State of New Mexico

  • American Dietetic Association Registered Dietitian (RD)

  • Certified Diabetic Educator

  • Professional licensure as appropriate to the clinical objectives of the unit:
  • Registered Dietitian, Licensed Dietitian, or Licensed Nutritionist in State of New Mexico

  • American Dietetic Association Registered Dietitian (RD)

  • Certified Diabetic Educator

  • Testing Requirements:
  • Tuberculin Skin Test required annually

  • Working Conditions Requirements:
  • Minor Hazard - physical risks, dirt, dust, fumes, noise
