Position Summary

Purpose

The Beal Botanical Garden Education Coordinator I will improve our programming, interpretation and garden space to connect wellbeing, belonging, and environmental sustainability in ways that elevate the experience of everyone visiting the garden. They will develop and implement programs that connect individuals and groups to the garden who do are unaccustomed to participating in gardening and nature activities.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops agendas, sets dates and coordinates speakers, contracts, facilities and works within budgets to coordinate and facilitate workshops, events, and education programs 

  • Facilitate changes to the garden space and programs that make them welcoming to everyone; facilitate opportunities to connect new audiences to gardening and nature  

  • Coordinate with other on- and off-campus groups and units to increase involvement in garden programming 

  • Facilitate changes to the garden to make it more environmentally sustainable and develop programming to highlight sustainability 

  • Assist in developing programming to and content for our Nurture Your Roots wellbeing program 

  • Develop materials and programs that will enable diversification of our audience and meaningful connect our programs to groups and individuals that may not be accustomed to participating in nature and gardening activities 

  • Coordinates publicity and organizational procedures in order to implement workshops, events and programs 

  • Assists in evaluating programs in order to enhance future programs and to disseminate information 


Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Educational Theory and Methodology and/or a specialization in the designated area of expertise; six months to one year of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in planning and overseeing seminars and conferences including public relations, organizing and disseminating training materials and information both written and web- based; budget and records maintenance and computer support; experience in database, spreadsheet, word processing, desktop publishing, knowledge of HTML programming and web site development and management; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Desired Qualifications
  • Experience or education in environmental sustainability  

  • Experience working with diverse audiences and introducing them to gardening and nature 

  • Experience in facilitating wellbeing programs that connect people with plants and nature 

  • Experience working in a public garden or similar institution

Summary of Physical Demands

The job requires significant physical effort and involves shoveling, hoeing, lifting of over seventy-five (75) pounds and eye/hand coordination 26-75% of the time.
