The University of North Georgia is currently accepting applications for a Educational Talent Search (ETS) Project Advisor II on the Gainesville Campus. The Educational Talent Search (ETS) program identifies and assists individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds who have the potential to succeed in higher education. The program provides academic, career, and financial counseling to its participants and encourages them to graduate from high school and continue on to and complete their postsecondary education. The program publicizes the availability of financial aid and assists participants with the postsecondary application process. Educational Talent Search also encourages persons who have not completed education programs at the secondary or postsecondary level to enter or reenter and complete postsecondary education. The goal of ETS is to increase the number of youth from disadvantaged backgrounds who complete high school and enroll in and complete their postsecondary education. The advisor(s) assists the project director with providing direct academic/career services to middle and high school students within Gainesville City School District.    This position is funded by the U.S. Department of Education; continuation of the position is based on renewal annual funding.

  • Recruitment, selection and enrollment of eligible participants.
  • Assist high school students with completing college applications, scholarship applications, FAFSA, and SAT/ACT registration; contacting college officials/administrators on students¿ behalf
  • Conduct workshops, small group, and individual meetings  and plan and execute career, cultural, and college campus visits with ETS participants.
  • Ongoing review of student caseload including: needs asssessments, individual academic plans, postsecondary enrollment, scholarships exploration, and financial aid need.
  • Collect accurate and confidential records for participants (including college and career plans, transcripts, test scores, scholarships, GPA, events attended, etc.) with all necessary physical documentation to ensure compliance with federal requirements. Assist with all required reports, particularly the Annual Performance Report for the U.S. Dept. of Education. 
  • Provide academic interventions, college enrollment assistance, advising and tutoring support/referral services aligned with a rigorous course of study, advanced placement, and/or dual enrollment. 
  • Ensure safety and security of minors while traveling during day and overnight trips; travel on weekends, spring break, summer, and/or teacher work days as scheduled by project director.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of academic advising, standardized testing, college admissions, financial aid processes, etc.
  • Bachelor's degree required. 
  • Minimum of three (3) years of professional experience working for a TRIO federal program or a program serving low-income and potential first-generation college students (grades 6-12).
  • Degree in counseling, education, psychology, student personnel, public administration, business, or social work preferred.
  • Preferred qualification: Bilingual (Spanish/English); experience providing academic advising services, 21st Century employability skills, non-cognitive skills, college, career, financial aid, and economic literacy, information to secondary school students (grades 6-12).
