The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
 

Position Summary

The Editorial Coordinator provides 10 hours/week of general operating support for The Journal of Philosophy, a leading, monthly scholarly journal that has been published continuously by members of the faculty of Columbia???s Department of Philosophy since 1904. This position is designed for late stage, dissertating doctoral candidates who would like to learn more about academic publishing and who seek a unique window onto the field of philosophy as it is currently practiced. However, the position is not limited to students. Each Coordinator is expected to hold the position for up to two years. In addition to compensation, the Editorial Coordinator will receive mentoring opportunities and professional development.

Reporting to the Managing Editor, the Editorial Coordinator will help to facilitate the peer-review process by creating reports and reminders for participating editors. The 2024 Editorial Coordinator will help to implement a new peer-review platform and bridge any gaps between participating editors and the platform???s requirements, as directed by the Managing Editor.

The Editorial Coordinator may attend and take notes at meetings, support special events, coordinate the donation of books, conduct outreach to the philosophical community, and help develop departmental resources such as reports, lists, databases, and guidelines. The Editorial Coordinator may have the opportunity to conduct copy-editing and proofreading on behalf of the Journal.

The Editorial Coordinator will handle confidential information that requires a high degree of discretion. Some responsibilities require a high degree of accuracy as well as the ability to manage and communicate time-sensitive information.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor???s degree or its equivalent required. 2-4 years of related experience or educational equivalent.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with the field of philosophy and interest in academic publishing.


Other Requirements

  • Excellent command of English.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, including a high level of attention to detail and active listening skills.
  • Excellent customer service, organizational, and time-management skills to support faculty, editors, authors, and vendors.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with excellent judgment and discretion.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diplomacy in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to take direction given verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to set priorities and work independently.
  • Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and Adobe Reader. Proficiency with Google Sheets, Google Docs, and Google Drive.
