Department Summary

University Advancement (UA) supports the University of Oregon’s (UO) mission of providing exceptional teaching, discovery, and service by strategically positioning the university to create awareness, build long-term relationships, and secure resources that increase understanding and further its aims. The Advancement Strategies and Technology Innovation (ASTI) department is focused on finding the solutions for foundational issues that will best position University Advancement (UA) to achieve its goals around engagement and fundraising. The department has a unique function in that it is based in UA, but also has a strong working partnership and provides strategic direction to the University of Oregon Foundation (UOF) and UO Information Services staff.

As part of Advancement Strategies, Technology, and Innovation (ASTI), the Office of Donor Relations and Outreach (DRO) manages donor relations, donor experience, volunteer coordination, gift administration, and constituent communication. It is responsible for the design and implementation of a program of donor recognition and communication for donors and constituents. DRO works cooperatively with the UO President and administrators, school and college fundraising staff, and across Advancement to provide a university-wide stewardship and communication program that moves prospects and donors through engagement and solicitation readiness.


Position Summary

The Editorial and Communications Specialist (specialist) supports the outreach and communications work of University Advancement (UA) and the Office of Development within UA.

This position identifies storytelling and engagement opportunities and writes copy for a range of channels and styles including feature, digital, social media, and case for support documents. This position will also contribute to and support editorial planning.

The specialist serves as a content creator, editorial and written brand expert, project manager, and editorial planner providing creative and strategic input and drafting and editing content for key communications efforts.

In compliance with brand standards. as set by University Communications, the Editorial and Communications Specialist will:
• Write a variety of content pieces.
• Review and edit content for brand voice and quality.
• Review and update content planning projects in workforce platforms, provide updates on projects in planning meetings, and help assign tasks as needed.
• Analyze content performance and provide recommendations for creating engaging, high-performing content for alumni and donor audiences.
• Attend Development and Advancement planning meetings as assigned.

This limited-duration position is expected to last for one year, with the possibility of extending the position for one additional year.

This position will be located in Eugene and is eligible to work a hybrid schedule. The specialist will need to work on campus approximately 2 days per week.


Minimum Requirements

• Four years of experience as an editor reviewing and correcting written materials for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and syntax errors and modifying copy to conform to standards of style, length and ease of understanding.
• A Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, or related field may substitute for two years of the required experience.

• Proficiency in written communications including feature, email marketing, digital, and social media formats.

• Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills; attention to detail.
• Excellent organizational skills and outstanding customer service.
• Experience maintaining cooperative, respectful working relationships with staff, volunteers, and students from a wide range of backgrounds and perspectives in a service-oriented environment.


Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with higher-education communications.
• Experience with fundraising communications.
• Success navigating a complex organization.
• Advanced degree in communications, marketing, or related field.
• Experience posting and updating digital content using a content management platform (CMS).
