Reporting to the Planning and Innovation Department Head, the Group Leader (GL) plays a pivotal role in shaping ESnet's technological landscape. This influential position involves architecting cutting-edge services, fostering cross-functional collaboration, and spearheading our organization-wide technology strategy. The GL advises senior management, conducts technology investigations, and oversees system architecture development to support ESnet's mission in advancing energy, climate science, and cosmic exploration.

 

We're seeking a dynamic individual with a blend of technical prowess, research acumen, and exceptional leadership skills. The ideal candidate possesses a comprehensive understanding of diverse technologies, adept project management abilities, and stellar communication skills to engage with stakeholders across national and international networks. With a focus on customer orientation and collaborative problem-solving, the GL will lead a talented team while managing budgets and ensuring alignment with ESnet's funding objectives.

 

What You Will Do:

Management and Administration

  • Lead and supervise the Planning and Architecture Group, including staffing, mentoring, and performance management.
  • Develop standardized processes, models, and tools aligned with ESnet's mission.
  • Prototype new services integrating expertise across ESnet groups to drive technology strategy.
  • Manage group priorities in line with ESnet's objectives, including project scoping and prioritization.
  • Create a diverse, innovative work environment adhering to DOE and Lab policies.
  • Serve as a professional spokesperson for LBNL and the division.
  • Contribute expertise to shape the organization's future direction based on user needs and mission.

Planning, Architecture, and Engineering

  • Lead 5-7 year strategic planning for next-gen networking, computing, and storage.
  • Conduct technical reviews to ensure alignment with ESnet's direction.
  • Guide deployment of national-scale backbone and infrastructure.
  • Develop analytic models for trend analysis.
  • Transition prototypes to production with ESnet's Pilots and Prototypes group.
  • Facilitate knowledge transfer.
  • Foster collaborations internally and externally.
  • Drive requirements gathering, feasibility studies, and system architecture aligned with the division's plan.
  • Engage in outreach through articles, presentations, and direct contacts.

Institutional Security

  • Embed cybersecurity into ESnet's culture and development processes.

 

What is Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a lead/supervisory role in engineering, preferably 15 years in the NREN environment.
  • Proven ability to lead and develop diverse teams, resolve conflicts, and foster positive relationships.
  • Expertise in project management, including scope, schedule, and budget planning and execution.
  • Strong background in user requirements gathering and technical specification development.
  • Familiarity with DOE Office of Science research programs and NREN communities.
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills, with a collaborative approach.
  • Experience in designing and managing complex systems in carrier backbone environments.
  • Proficiency in service provisioning, resource allocation, and path computation in multi-domain networks.
  • Track record of mentoring students and staff.
  • Ability to present technical findings at committees and conferences.
  • Travel required for project presentations and updates.

 

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
  • This full salary range of this position is between $164,616 to $277,800 per year and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $185,196 to $226,356 per year depending upon candidate’s full skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.

  • Work may be performed on-site, hybrid, full-time telework or remote modes. Work must be performed within the United States.
