About the Department | The Center for Complex Particle Systems (COMPASS) is a National Science Foundation (NSF)-supported Science and Technology Center (STC). COMPASS seeks to discover new science, technologies and techniques related to complex particle systems. The outcomes of COMPASS activities will lead to the better understanding of properties of complex particle systems enabling new technologies or improved processes. The centers education and broadening participation activities will enhance participation of women, underrepresented minorities, and persons with disabilities in STEM disciplines. The centers outreach effort is anchored in promoting cognitive diversity, hence at the core of its outreach is collaboration with scientists from Africa. COMPASS is a partnership between the University of Michigan, North Carolina State University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Chicago State University, Northeastern University, Wayne State University, and University of South California. COMPASS headquarters are in Ann Arbor, Michigan, but the diversity coordinator will be based on NC State’s Centennial Campus. |
Essential Job Duties | The primary purpose of the COMPASS Diversity Coordinator is to implement the Center Broadening Participation plans by leading and managing the day-to-day outreach and recruitment efforts and helping to train and mentor students, enabling their retention and graduation. The Diversity Coordinator is responsible for planning and coordinating outreach and recruitment events, data tracking and analysis on the success of the events and developing new strategies for growing diversity in the graduate student, undergraduate student, fellows, and postdoctoral applicant pools. The Diversity Coordinator is responsible for providing informal and formal professional mentorship for COMPASS undergraduate students, graduate students, fellows, and postdoctoral scholars. The Diversity Coordinator provides additional support for the educational and integration goals and activities of COMPASS, particularly as it relates to the training, retention, and graduation of students. The diversity coordinator will also handle the center’s effort to collaborate with researchers in Africa. They will assist in recruitment, on-boarding and tracking progress of teams coming from or going to African partner institutions. Roles and Responsibilities:
