About the Department | The College of Humanities and Social Sciences is one of the largest colleges at NC State University in terms of student headcount. The mission of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences is to serve the residents of North Carolina and meet the challenges of the 21st century by educating our students to be future leaders and responsible citizens with a distinctive willingness to engage in the life of their communities, their state, and their nation. Our college offers baccalaureate, masters and doctoral degrees in a wide range of traditional and professional disciplines; it serves business, industry, government, public education, and individual citizens of the state through teaching, research, and engagement. These programs are carried out in ten academic units. Each functional area is funded by combinations of state appropriations, public and private contracts and grants, miscellaneous gifts and receipts, and sales and service receipts. Currently, the college employs 225 tenured/tenure track faculty, 239 professional track faculty, 97 staff, and 383 graduate teaching and research assistants. The college has (for FY ‘21) 103 endowments with a total market value of $11.8M and private fundraising $2.4M. Annual expenditures exceed $65 million. The college’s research is supported by an average of $6.7 million over the last 5 years in annual grant and contract funding. In alignment with the University’s Wolfpack 2030 strategic plan, the college is implementing a new strategic plan at the center of which is a commitment to interdisciplinary collaborations to solve critical societal problems. The Bob and Carol Mattocks Distinguished Professor will have opportunities to play a central role in pushing forward the university, college, and school strategic priorities. NC State is located in Raleigh, the state capital and heart of the Research Triangle, and is ranked regularly as one of the nation’s best places to live and work. The university is consistently ranked among the top 50 public universities in the country. The Department of Public Administration also enjoys a strong national reputation, with an active faculty and strong program rankings. SPIA, in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at NC State, also houses the Department of Political Science, the Master of International Studies Program, the Public Safety Leadership Initiative, and the Leadership in the Public Sector degree completion program. |
Essential Job Duties | The Department of Public Administration, in the School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA) at North Carolina State University (NC State) invites applications at the senior associates or full professor level for the newly established Bob and Carol Mattocks Distinguished Professorship. The ideal candidate will be a nationally and internationally recognized scholar and thought leader in the field of nonprofit management and leadership. The individual selected will be expected to maintain an active research portfolio in the area of nonprofit leadership, seek external research support, teach and mentor graduate students, and contribute to the expansion of the NCSU Department of Public Administration’s national reputation as a leader in the field of nonprofit studies. Their work should shed light on the social impact of nonprofits in local and/or global communities. The expected teaching load is two courses per semester. The successful candidate will also advise and mentor graduate students, which includes service on doctoral student committees. Course offerings in nonprofits include courses that are part of an undergraduate minor in Nonprofit Studies, a NASPAA accredited MPA program, and a PhD in Public Administration. The MPA program’s mission serves pre- and in-service students, with most courses offered face-to face in the evenings, although hybrid and online courses are also available. Ph.D. seminars are cohort based and delivered on campus. A successful candidate will be prepared to engage students in active learning, as well as adapt their teaching styles to match the needs of our student body. |
