General Information
The Learning Centers (LC) at James Madison University invites applications for the position of Disciplinary Writing Coordinator at the rank of Lecturer. This position is a 10-month renewable term appointment. The LC provides student writing assistance in the Writing Center and support for writing instruction at JMU. Responsibilities include teaching, writing consulting, faculty/curriculum development, unit-wide service activities, and professional development. The Disciplinary Writing Coordinator will also oversee the Writing Center’s embedded consulting program. The Disciplinary Writing Coordinator will report to the LC’s Associate Director who oversees the Writing Center, and they will work on a team with two additional Writing Center faculty members.
The Learning Centers unit consists of five programs that support students’ academic success: the University Writing Center, Communication Center, Multilingual Student Services, Peer Assisted Study Sessions, and Science & Math Learning Center, all housed in a 14,000 square foot, state-of-the-art facility in the center of JMU’s campus. The unit’s 14 faculty members teach in 10 different disciplines, provide instruction in the LC, engage in relevant scholarship and professional development, administer programs, and train and mentor more than 100 peer educators. The LC is supported by a team of two administrative staff members, a Senior Associate Director, and an Executive Director, providing exceptional support for each of the programs and faculty members. The unit reports to the Vice Provost for Student Academic Success and Enrollment Management. Over the last three years, the unit has devoted extra attention to an antiracism initiative in order to increase inclusive excellence within the Learning Centers. Duties and Responsibilities
Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Support the Associate Director in recruiting, interviewing, hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating peer educators.
  • Oversee the Writing Center’s embedded consulting program and liaise with other units on campus.
  • Teach two courses per year, and provide Writing Center consultations.
  • Support faculty in their writing instruction and assist with curriculum development.
  • Develop writing resources for students and faculty (e.g., videos, tutorials, handouts).
  • Recruit and support students from underrepresented populations to increase inclusive excellence.
  • Engage in appropriate scholarly and professional development activities.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in composition, rhetoric, or a closely-related field.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Tutoring and/or teaching experience within a writing center, writing program, or similar academic support program.
  • Strong understanding of writing center scholarship and praxis, including genre theory.
  • Demonstrated success in collaboration.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Terminal degree in composition, rhetoric, or a closely-related field.
  • Experience with college-level tutoring or other learning support programs.
  • Tutor training experience, including the ability to design and deliver a curriculum and assess learning.
  • Assessment and/or program evaluation experience.
  • Strong understanding and practical application of diverse learning experiences.

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes campus housing fire statistics for the most recent three-year period, a description of each on-campus student housing facility fire safety system, the number of fire drills held during the previous calendar year, policies or rules on portable electrical appliances, smoking, and open flames in student housing; and procedures for student housing evacuation in the event of fire along with other fire safety information.
