DIRECTOR – STUDENT DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS (TBLC)
TRUMAN COLLEGE

 

Harry S Truman College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago, seeks a Director- Student Development Projects (Truman Bilingual Learning Center). The Director of the Truman Bilingual Learning Center (TBLC) coordinates and evaluates initiatives that focus on increasing access, closing equity gaps, improving a sense of belonging, providing academic support, and increasing the retention, transfer, and success rates of bilingual, bicultural, English Language Learners. This position is responsible for the day-to-day management of the TBLC operations and attainment of the Center’s goals under the Student Development and Engagement Center (SDEC). In addition, the TBLC Director serves as Undocumented Student Liaison under Illinois HB3438 to create, share, and grow strategies and interventions in collaboration with key college, community, and district stakeholders to support undocumented and mixed-status students.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

·       Develops, implements and oversees activities and programming for the TBLC.

·       Works collaboratively with SDEC leaders, college support teams, community partners, and faculty to develop a college-specific theory of action and plan to effectively increase access, close equity gaps, improve a sense of belonging, provide academic support, and increase the retention, transfer, and success rates of bilingual, bicultural, English Language Learners.

·       Offers bilingual/bicultural support and works collaboratively with teams to implement programs and support services for bilingual, bicultural, English Language Learners including orientation, college success workshops, academic alert system, welcome events, involvement fairs, and other campus-led initiatives as assigned.

·       Facilitates the integration of bilingual, bicultural, English Language Learners to the college community, coordinating campus events to introduce students to co-curricular activities, support programs and services, student clubs and other student engagement opportunities.

·       Monitors and tracks the progress of the grants’ program achievements, submits required programmatic reports, and meets other requirements in compliance with grant agreements and reporting requirements.

·       Tracks, monitors, and measures TBLC activities, progress, and outcomes, utilizing technology (Navigate, systems and databases) to meet grant’s reporting.

·       Monitors and measures TBLC activities including student engagement/participation and analyzes student enrollment and retention data to assess program success and impact on student retention.

·       Collaborates and maintains working partnerships with staff across college departments and faculty to ensure successful implementation of student support structures.

·       Manages and coordinates staff (e.g., clerical support, work-study student, peer mentor coordinator), completes performance evaluations, promotes innovative and creative ideas among staff and fosters a cohesive workforce that provides professional assistance to students.

·       Evaluates TBLC initiatives and draws upon best practices and emerging trends in student transition, retention and engagement to effect changes and ensure continuous improvement and growth.

·       Attends and presents at conferences.

·       Collaborates with Director of FYE, SDE Coordinator, and Advising team to create and implement strategies for equity, sense of belonging, and connectedness including workshops and training sessions for students.

·       Supports Transitional Bilingual Learning Community (TBLC1) Faculty Team and Adult Ed with recruitment of students for GECC learning community, career trajectory cohorts, and Bridge program.

·       Provides regular written updates and communications.

·       Assists with development and fundraising projects.

·       Performs other job-related duties and projects (i.e., participation in appropriate committees) as assigned in support of the College’s mission, core values and goals.

 

District-wide Specific Responsibilities

·       Actively supports and participates in the district-wide IL HB3438 trainings and bi-weekly meetings.

·       Facilitates the integration of undocumented and mixed-status students to the college community, coordinating campus events to introduce students to co-curricular activities, support programs and services, student clubs and other student engagement opportunities.

·       Develops ongoing opportunities to assist in the academic and social transition and integration of undocumented and mixed-status students to the CCC community.

·       Provides regular written updates and communications.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

·       Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in higher education, college student support services, social work, counseling, or related field

·       3-5 years of experience in student services or a related field in a higher education institution

·       1-2 years of program, grant or project administration work experience

·       Knowledge of student development theory and best practices

·       Knowledge of bilingual, bicultural student program best practices; principles and theories that strengthen resiliency factors for bilingual, bicultural, English Language Learners

·       Knowledge of academic support structures relating to student retention and success, and sense of belonging

·       Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills in Spanish and English

·       Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusiveness, and equity in education including experience working with undocumented population

·       Must be able and willing to work some evenings and weekends

·       Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

·       Consideration will be given to candidates with an equivalent combination of training, experience, and Spanish language proficiency.
