Job Description:

Iowa State University is accepting applications for a Director of Strength and Conditioning. The position will report to Administration and will oversee staff and programming for our Olympic sports, except basketball.  This position will serve as the primary S&C coach responsible to develop and administer a comprehensive and effective strength and conditioning program for a sport to be determined (likely, Cross Country/Track & Field, Volleyball or Softball). This position will also delegate, oversee and mentor the S&C coaches to provide comprehensive and effective strength and conditioning programs for our other Division I Olympic sports. This position will:

  • Oversee weight room operations, programming, facility management, budget, S&C personnel, SOPs, and related administrative duties at Lied Rec Center and Stark Performance Center.
  • Oversee the evaluation, design and implementation of cutting-edge strength, agility, and conditioning programs for the various positions and seasons for multiple sports that will help ISU athletes and team performance excel.
  • Oversee the teaching and demonstration of proper techniques and safety, conduct performance testing, adapt workouts based on each student-athletes needs and health, and effectively motivate athletes.
  • Hire, train, and develop assigned S&C staff. Assist them in design and implementation of cutting-edge strength, agility, and conditioning programs for their sports. Oversee scheduling of resources.
  • Evaluate the Olympic S&C programs, build trusting relationships with the head coaches, develop proactive solutions to their requests, and resolve any issues that escalate beyond their S&C coach.
  • Ensure data metrics, analysis, and daily performance reports on assigned student-athletes are being conducted effectively and add value.
  • Work collaboratively with the Sports Medicine professionals and Coaches.
  • Contribute to and enhance a competitive athletic experience.
  • Establish and maintain an environment conducive to the welfare and academic success of the student-athletes.
  • Establish and maintain effective interactions with students, colleagues, university staff and administrators, alumni, media and the public.
  • Commitment to and responsibility for adhering to all rules and regulations of the University, Big 12 Conference, and NCAA.

The ideal candidates will have excellent technical knowledge and proven success with S&C for a variety of Olympic sports at a highly competitive level, strong leadership and analytical skills, exceptional motivational and communication skills, and supervisory ability. Candidates are expected to be committed to multiculturalism and working with a diverse student body. Must be available and flexible to work evenings and/or weekends, extended hours, and to travel with a team as requested.

Candidates are required to have and maintain current certification through a nationally accredited strength and conditioning certification program in accordance with NCAA requirements.

Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an on-going basis without sponsorship.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree.

Experience coaching strength and conditioning for a professional or collegiate teams.

Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the NSCA or Strength and Conditioning Coach Certified (SCCC) through the CSCCa.

CPR/AED and First Aid certified.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience strength coaching for a NCAA DI or Olympic team in assigned sports.

Supervisory, management and budget experience.

Advanced knowledge of Catapult GPS System.

Experience coaching male and female athletes.

Master’s degree in exercise science, kinesiology or related field.
