Director of Special Care Dentistry/Special Needs Clinic - 23000000CE
The University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Dentistry invites qualified applications and nominations for a full-time non-tenure track faculty position at the Assistant/Associate/Professor level in one of the colleges academic departments to serve as Director of the Special Needs Clinic. Applicant must have a strong commitment to special care dental education, scholarship, and service. The director will be responsible for leading, planning, development, implementation, growth, and sustainability of the college’s Special Needs Clinic. Responsibilities will include didactic and clinical instruction of dental students, dental hygiene students, and graduate students, along with scholarly activity and service. The Director will be responsible for program curricula and for ensuring program compliance with the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) and other programmatic standards. This position will be both administrative and include direct patient care as a clinical faculty member. The Director will design and build a program that fosters the facilitation of access to care across the special needs community through various collaborative efforts. The Director will also provide care for adults and children who have impairments or disabilities that are physical, medical, mental, intellectual, sensory, emotional, or social; manage patients on a referral basis in accordance with established patient pathways and communicate appropriately with referring practitioners; and participate in after hour call if required by hospital or health center partners. Responsibilities will include didactic and clinical instruction of dental students, dental hygiene students, and residents. Dental Director will supervise/oversee clinical faculty and staff in the Special Needs Clinic. Teaching and patient care duties are required with research engagement highly recommended.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: Candidate must have a D.D.S./D.M.D. or advanced degree from a U.S. or accredited dental school and be eligible for licensure in Tennessee. Candidate must have an AEGD, GPR, PEDS, and/or hold some certification, while having experience in special care and hospital dentistry. A candidate without advanced dental certificates will be considered if they have 5 years or more of significant special care and hospital dentistry experience. Candidate credentials must allow for the successful granting of hospital privileges. Teaching experience is required. It is desired that preferred candidates have previous experience with AEGD/GPR accreditation renewals. Aside from expected clinical and experiential requirements, it is desired that candidate have and demonstrate a strong advocacy for special needs patients; that candidate support training of alternatives for GA or OR trips; and that candidate have an appreciation for interdisciplinary outreach. DEPARTMENTAL PREFERENCES: Experience in special care and hospital dentistry Candidate must have an AEGD, GPR, PEDS, or some certification, with experience in special care and hospital dentistry.
