About the Department:

The Schar School of Policy and Governments' objective is to prepare our students for high-level decision making in a complex and technological world.

About the Position:

The Director of Master's Student Services is responsible for the development, coordination, delivery, and assessment of academic advising, academic support, and student services initiatives for the Masters' and Certificate programs within the Schar School. This position reports to the Assistant Dean of Graduate Student Services and works collaboratively with the graduate program directors, faculty, staff, and other university offices to foster student achievement and successful student retention.

Responsibilities:

  • Student Support:
    • Directs the planning and leads the implementation of student services for Schar master's students including the full range of academic advising activities, academic support initiatives, registration, and other associated student services processes for all master's and certificate students;
    • Creates and implements initiatives tailored to diverse students that foster the academic success and degree attainment of underrepresented populations;
    • Establishes strategic priorities for the delivery of services in conjunction with the Assistant Dean of Graduate Student Services;
    • Serves as the lead academic advisor to select graduate programs;
    • Leads the tracking and enforcement of student compliance with academic policies; and
    • Evaluates services and processes in consultation with the Assistant Dean of Graduate Student Services.
  • Outreach and Events:
    • Plans and executes new student orientation, commencement activities, co-curricular events, and academic support;
    • Designs outreach efforts demonstrating a respect for diversity and inclusion that serves to attract underrepresented populations to the Schar School;
    • Collaborates with the marketing team to ensure events are included in the marketing workflow and plans; and
    • Serves as the lead representative for Schar Master's Student Services at admissions open houses and prospective student receptions.
  • Program and Faculty Support:
    • Proactively collaborates with and advises instructional faculty and Program Directors on master's program curricular issues and student academic issues;
    • Assists Program Directors and other staff with course offerings and scheduling; and
    • Identifies opportunities for collaborative programming across Schar student services functions and with other university entities to support student academic success and student retention and direct program implementation efforts.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a related field;
  • Significant experience in higher education/student services or related work to include professional experience in academic advising (typically 5+ years);
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in the field of higher education;
  • Experience using technology to support data management and presentations;
  • Willingness to work in a team-oriented office;
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and writing skills;
  • Proven leadership ability; and
  • Exceptional organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional experience in academic advising or related field; and
  • Experience working with college-educated/adult populations is desired.
