What we want   


The Director of Lab Operations, under general direction, administers operational elements of activities associated with assigned department, including the in-vivo animal monitoring core research facility within the Department of Medical Physiology.  This role provides oversight of animal surgery and post-operative care facilities, designs and executes experiments involving radio telemetry instrumented animals along with analysis, storage, distribution, and security of acquired data.

Required Education and Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in applicable field or an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • 10 years of related lab administration or operations experience

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to supervise

Preferred Qualification:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological science

  • Demonstrated expertise in performing whole animal physiological studies in conscious and anesthetized rats and mice

  • Knowledge of transgenic mouse colony management is essential, including animal husbandry and genotype acquisition and preservation

  • Knowledge of tissue micro-punch collection and performance of western blot analysis of isolated proteins is essential

  • Knowledge of digital data acquisition and analysis, data management and security, data backup, storage and distribution/sharing is also required

  • Knowledge of laboratory and animal safety regulations and policies

Responsibilities:

Leadership & Lab Management

  • Provides primary daily operational leadership for activities of the lab.

  • Assists in interview processes for employees prior to hiring.

  • Directs, supervises, coordinates, and evaluates activities of laboratory personnel, including students and postdoctoral trainees in support of funded research projects and animal monitoring departmental core facility.

  • Plans and coordinates meetings whereby administrative, technical, and participant team members can collaborate, present results, and receive constructive criticism on the overall program.

  • Directs program participants in matters related to fiscal management to ensure resources are accounted for according to budgetary guidelines.

  • Assists with directing, implementing and monitoring goals associated with the operations of all labs under Medical Physiology.

  • Leads laboratory program integration in accordance with the scope and mission of the Medical Physiology department. 

Lab Operations

  • Trains personnel to surgically instrument rats and mice with radio telemetry transmitters and indwelling arterial/venous catheters.

  • Trains laboratory personnel in stereotaxic surgery for brain site-specific placement of nanoinjection/optical fiber cannulae.

  • Oversees collection of brain site-specific injection of neuroanatomical tracers and adeno-associated viral particles.

  • Supervises animal surgery and post-operative care facilities, designs and executes experiments involving radio telemetry instrumented animals along with analysis, storage, distribution, and security of acquired data. 

Compliance and Safety Policies

  • Oversees scheduled research compliance and chemical/biosafety inspections.

  • Maintains any applicable accreditations and lab equipment credentials/services.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
