Job Description

The Director of Institutional Research & Effectiveness is responsible for providing institutional and administrative support by collecting, analyzing, reporting, presenting, and archiving all relevant information for the ongoing efficient and effective functioning of Great Basin College (GBC).

The Director will coordinate institutional data collection and reporting as needed by GBC faculty, departments, programs, and administrators. Reporting is also required by the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) and other State, Federal, and external entities as needed. The Director is responsible for managing the academic assessment activities of the campus and supports all accreditation (institutional and programmatic) efforts college-wide, and serves as the campus Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) Liaison officer.  This position will work closely with the Academic Affairs office, Academic Deans, Department Chairs, and Campus Directors to ensure the College meets its mission, goals, and institutional learning outcomes and remains in good accreditation standing.  The Director will have a primary responsibility in the compilation of GBC assessment documentation for internal use and accreditation purposes. Self-direction, communication, and collaborative skills are important in this position.

The position may be based at the main GBC Campus in Elko or any of its center locations in Ely, Pahrump, or Winnemucca. Consists of occasional travel, with or without accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is required primarily within the state, primarily via automobile for meetings with occasional overnight stays.

This position reports to the Vice President for Student and Academic Affairs (VPSAA).  The Institutional Research Department consists for the director and one part-time analyst. The director works closely with all data stakeholders, particularly with GBC Student Information Systems Office (SISOPS) and Admissions and Records Office. The director also works closely with Student Services units and Academic Affairs faculty to coordinate assessment reporting.

GBC serves the students and communities of Nevada. This position must demonstrate a strong work ethic and a high standard of professional behavior. Due to the relatively small size of the College, the job requires performing duties at a wide range of skill and responsibility levels.

Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree appropriate to the needs of the position is required.

  • At least three years of experience in institutional research in higher education is required. 

  • Experience with data acquisition, management and analysis (including use of Access, SPSS or SQL) is required.  Must be able to interpret data and communicate its meaning at the user’s level.

  • Must be familiar with: The requirements of IPEDS, Perkins, and other national-level reporting; Ability to use available databases such as National Student Clearinghouse, IPEDS, Census data, and similar; Accreditation processes and reporting at both the program and institutional levels; Processes of planning and assessment, and the documentation of these.

Required skills:

  • Technical/analytical knowledge and skills required for data collection, compilation, storage, retrieval, and analysis (e.g., knowledge of definitions, formulae, data structures, skills in research design, statistics, computer software (including SPSS and Microsoft Office products), web utilization, oral and written communication, etc.).

  • Knowledge of substantive management issues such as enrollment management and patterns, budgeting formulas, resource allocation, assessment, and strategic planning.

  • Contextual knowledge of higher education in general and community colleges specifically (e.g., knowledge of organizational history and culture, roles and responsibilities, and the larger external environment).

Preferred skills:

  • Familiarity with Peoplesoft, Oracle EPM, and/or OBIEE, or similar platforms with the ability to easily adapt to these.

Responsibilities

The primary responsibility is to provide data, analysis, and reports to responsible parties in a timely manner for data-based decision making, using a battery of standardized and ad hoc studies and data collection measures. The information will be used in working with GBC faculty and administration in planning and assessment in domains such as academic programs, admissions and enrollment, persistence and retention, alumni and graduate follow-up, budget and finance, workload, facilities need and utilization, and external stakeholders.

Specific responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

  • Compile accurate reporting information, on schedule, for reports due at the national and regional level, including such reporting as IPEDS, Perkins, WICHE, SARA, etc.

  • Compile accurate reporting information, on schedule, for reports due for NSHE, including regular reports relating to such topics as NSHE data warehouse, enrollment, remediation, and workload, and irregularly requested reports and analysis on a wide range of topics.

  • Compile accurate reporting information, on schedule, for reports and analysis requested by GBC administration and faculty (as approved by the VPSAA), including information and reports needed for program reviews, surveys, program and institutional accreditation, grants, and other studies.

  • Oversee various surveys and compile the results as needed.

  • Annually compile a GBC Fact Book displaying descriptive data of GBC, including ongoing metrics.

  • Work closely with administration and faculty in the area of institutional strategic planning, assessment, and accreditation.

  • Oversee the distribution, collection, and data compilation for student course ratings and the monitoring of syllabus content.

  • Work with groups external to GBC – such as NSHE institutions, school districts, or businesses – to collaboratively collect data and generate reports.

  • Lead data advisory group to coordinate business process needs with reporting needs. Collaborate with departments and divisions to report and implement operational assessments. Enter information into various databases and reporting tools.

  • Directs assessment activities and documentation for all educational programs and courses, administrative support services, academic and student support services, and community/public services.

  • Implements a system for institutional strategic planning and assists in coordinating the annual implementation, assessment, monitoring, and reporting on the achievement of goals.

  • Provides assessment assistance to faculty and staff through training, consultation, and professional development activities.

  • Collaborates with deans to achieve assessment goals and ensure continual improvement in institutional effectiveness.

  • Oversee reporting of course student learning outcomes. Summarize data and information for College-wide Assessment Committee.

  • Serves as the college’s NWCCU liaison to include managing college’s efforts for successful NWCCU reaccreditation.

  • Participate in college-wide activities and committees as appropriate.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Travel

The position may require driving to other GBC campuses, with or without reasonable accommodation as per the Americans with Disabilities Act, with possible overnight stays to coordinate students and programs throughout the service area. There must be a commitment to the GBC mission to serve rural Nevada. The successful candidate will participate in several state-wide or national meetings each year that require overnight travel.

Compensation Grade

Administrative Faculty – D

The budgeted salary range for this position is $75,600 - $102,000.

Salary is based on relatable education and experience, internal equity and budgets.

Grants-in-aid for Faculty Employees

Great Basin College is proud to provide a reduced-rate tuition benefit to faculty and qualified dependents. Faculty can take up to six credits per semester at a reduced rate. Newly hired faculty must assure that their official transcripts are sent by the degree granting institution(s) to Great Basin College Human Resources Office within 30 days from the effective date of employment.  Regionally accredited institutions must have awarded academic degrees.
