Work Schedule | Monday - Friday; 8:00am to 5:00pm. In addition to weekday requirements, there will be evening and weekend responsibilities periodically |
Job Location | Raleigh, NC |
Department | College of Design |
About the Department | The College of Design at NC State University seeks an outstanding, visionary Director of Doctoral Programs—including both the PhD in Design and the Doctor of Design (DDes) programs. The Director will be an effective administrator, faculty member, and thought leader in design research, who can integrate the strengths of both doctoral programs and take them to the next level. The next Director of Doctoral Programs in Design will help the College lead the nation in transdisciplinary and applied design research. The Director of Doctoral Programs reports to the Associate Dean of Research, Doctoral Programs and Global Engagement, and engages with other unit Heads. Together with program administration and other College and University service, the Director is expected to contribute significantly to doctoral-level teaching and advising (6 SCH minimum), with a focus on applied and/or interdisciplinary design research. The position is a twelve-month tenured position at the rank of associate or full professor (full professor preferred). The successful candidate will be offered a tenure home in one of the College’s four units: comprising the Departments of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning; Media Arts, Design & Technology; Industrial Design and Graphic Design; and the School of Architecture. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and rank; the projected start date for this position is July 1, 2024. The PhD Program in Design (website ) The College of Design initiated the PhD in Design program in 1999. Today the program sustains around 35-40 students from all over the world pursuing research on questions that transcend and unite the design disciplines. The mission of the Doctor of Philosophy in Design is to advance knowledge in design through research and scholarship. This mission is built on the recognition of fertile common ground among the design disciplines and on the need for specificity and depth within them. The PhD program, therefore, values a broad range of research interests that aim to improve the human condition. Doctor of Design Program (website ) Established in 2017, the Doctor of Design (DDes) program is an advanced professional doctorate for established design practitioners, which complements the existing PhD in Design. As a self-funding distance-education doctoral model, it currently serves 32-35 student-practitioners, mainly (but not exclusively) from the United States. The purpose of the DDes program is to promote research in support of professional designers actively creating the artifacts, communications, environments, organizing structures, and systems of the future. This unique program offers DDes students the flexibility to continue working full-time and remain embedded in practice while completing program requirements. Although the culture and rhythms of both doctoral programs are distinct, they share in the extraordinary maturity, diversity, and capacity of all our students. At NC State, doctoral programs in design support four general domains of research:
