The University of Tennessee Foundation, Inc (UTFI) invites applications and nominations to fill the position of Director of Development for Planned Giving at the UT Institute for Agriculture (UTIA). Reporting to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Advancement, the Director of Development for Planned Giving is responsible for the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of planned gifts that will benefit any program, departments, and/or colleges for the Institute of Agriculture, including regional research centers and youth development centers. Planned gifts may include equity, life insurance, real estate, personal property, or monetary gifts.

 

This role will work with all alumni or friends of UTIA, regardless of where they may have graduated or what their philanthropic interest may be.  Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

 

Prospective Donor Identification and Cultivation:

  • Maintain a personal portfolio of planning giving prospects.
  • Develop, manage, and coordinate planning giving marketing efforts at the system level.
  • Coordinate and follow-up with leads received from mailings and web-based services.

Gift Solicitation:

  • Work closely with donors (prospective and current) and their financial advisors, attorneys, and CPAs regarding the structure of lifetime and testamentary planned gifts.
  • Prepare planned giving illustrations and proposals that consider the donor’s best interests, as well as the funding goals and needs of UTIA/UTFI.
  • Provide suggested charitable bequest language to attorneys for potential inclusion in donor’s estate plans.

Donor Stewardship:

  • Conduct appropriate stewardship activities including gift acknowledgements, donor recognition program(s) and preparing reports on planned giving/donors.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to develop solicitation and stewardship strategies.

 

This role will be expected to develop and nurture relationships with, as well as provide information and assistance to estate and tax planning professionals about programs and funding needs. These professionals safeguard the wealth of many donors and prospective donors and their clients rely on them for their professional advice. It is important that planned giving professionals maintain cordial and professional relationships with these types of advisors.

 



Qualifications

 

Required Education and Experience

The candidate who fills the Director of Development for Planned Giving position is required to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 5 or more years of experience in planned giving or related experience, i.e. sales, law or financial planning practice, direct fundraising
  • Candidates holding a graduate degree must have at least 3 years of experience.  
  • General working knowledge of planned giving strategies and techniques.
  • Excellent telephone manner, strong verbal and written communication and capacity to build strong relationships with donors and prospects.
  • Strong analytical ability, meticulous attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, and facility for mathematical and financial concepts required.
  • Excellent time management skills, flexibility in daily responsibilities, and ability to manage multiple and complex projects simultaneously.
  • Willingness and ability to engage in extensive travel, frequently overnight.

 

A valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record is required due to travel responsibilities of the position. UTFI reserves the right to consider all appropriate circumstances.  In general, any significant driving offense less than 12 months old will eliminate the application from consideration for the position.

Preferred Education and Experience

In addition to meeting the required qualifications, the preferred candidate will have:

  • Master’s degree
  • Prior experience using a prospect management database or planned giving software.
  • Prior experience in marketing efforts, including workshop presentations, web site updates, brochures, newsletters and print advertisements.
