The University of Maryland School of Medicine is searching for a seasoned development professional to serve as Director of Development (Major Gift Officer IV) for the Department of Medicine. The person serving in this position will report to the Associate Dean for Development and will spearhead all fundraising efforts within the Department of Medicine.  Acting with independent judgment and autonomy, while using industry best practices, s/he will develop donor activities to inspire private philanthropy including identifying new prospects, cultivating relationships, and soliciting and stewarding donors, grateful patients, and friends. This is an excellent opportunity for a seasoned development professional to build on recent fundraising efforts, as well as establish new efforts to strengthen and enhance the Department of Medicine’s philanthropic goals.

The Director of Development for the Department of Medicine carries out fundraising efforts for the Department of Medicine providing essential development support and partnering with physician/faculty on the discovery, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major gift prospects and donors. The incumbent focuses on soliciting gifts of at least $50,000 ranging up to gifts in the seven-figures and above. This professional is a critical member of the School of Medicine’s major gift’s team and works within the Department of Medicine to fashion a comprehensive development program.

The Director of Development will also work with the Institute for Human Virology, Institute for Vaccine Development and other Centers and Institutes to develop a major gift fundraising pipeline.  This work will be done in collaboration with our Corporate and Foundation Relations team.

Essential Functions:

  • Recommends, oversees, and implements strategies for cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of a significant portfolio of major gift prospects and donor families in support of annual priorities and on-going departmental goals.
  • Manage and develop strategies to engage, retain and increase existing prospect portfolio.
  • Develops written and verbal solicitation strategies, proposals, and presentation materials.
  • Performs complex assignments by developing methods, principles, and concepts to achieve major gifts outcomes with indirect supervision.
  • In conjunction with the senior leadership, develops a set of annual metrics that is comprised of:  Total Dollars Raised, Portfolio Size, Number of Proposals Presented and Number of Substantive Visits/Contacts.
  • Analyzes the effectiveness of programs and recommends improvements or new strategies.
  • Contributes individually and in cooperation with others to achieve the school’s major gift goals.
  • Travels regionally and nationally to visit with assigned prospects and donors and interacts regularly with faculty members.
  • May direct and manage philanthropy officers and staff.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

  

Education: Bachelors in a related field.

Experience: Six (6) years of philanthropy experience with at least three (3) years of managing prospects in a higher education or equivalent fundraising experience.

Supervisory Experience: One (1) year of work coordination or training of others

Certification/Licensure: N/A

Other: Must be working to raise at least $1 million dollars

Hiring Range: $150,000 - $160,000 (Commensurate with education and experience)
