Director of Clinical Education, Physical Therapy

Position Summary:

The Director of Clinical Education (DCE) Physical Therapy is a full-time, twelve-month faculty appointment reporting directly to the Program Director of the Doctor of Physical Therapy program in the Bert Bradford School of Health Sciences. The performance of this core faculty position will be evaluated based on the expectations outlined In the Faculty Manual for faculty on the academic track. The position is considered exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act, classified as FI.

The principal responsibilities of a full-time faculty member at the University of Charleston are outlined in the faculty position description published as an appendix in the Faculty Manual and include teaching, scholarship, professional development, and service to the institution. Fulfillment of these responsibilities may involve weekend, evening, off-campus, and online activities as assigned. This position may be considered for remote candidates, but periodic travel to Charleston, WV, will be required.

The DCE primary responsibilities will be to develop, implement, nurture, assess, and monitor activities related to the clinical education portion of the curriculum on behalf of the academic program. In addition, the DCE is expected to teach assigned courses, maintain an active and productive research agenda, and serve the university, community, and profession. The DCE will be the primary coordinator for interprofessional and intraprofessional experiences within the curriculum.

Essential Responsibilities:

Additional duties, specific to the physical therapy program and expectations for faculty success by the Bert Bradford School of Health Sciences include, but are not limited to:

  • Teach a 50% load
  • Provide instructional support for academic programs as assigned, including leading the clinical education component of the curriculum
  • Develop and deliver courses in-seat or online as requested
  • Assess student learning and contribute to program assessment
  • Fulfill all functions of a full-time faculty member as defined in the faculty manual, including participation in service to the University, professional development, and innovative teaching
  • Hold office hours
  • Participate in program, school, and faculty assembly meetings, graduation exercises, honors ceremonies, and Faculty Institute as requested
  • Perform duties relating to advising and mentoring of students within the scope of the DCE position
  • Support recruitment and retention initiatives within the Bert Bradford School of Health Sciences and across the University
  • Update and maintain one’s personnel action file (PAF), including annual performance appraisals, teaching evaluations, and peer classroom/online teaching observations
  • Serve as responsible party for the program in the scheduled or unscheduled absence of both the program director and assistant program director
  • Coordinate both inter- and intra-professional experiences for the curriculum working in concert with campus-wide initiatives as well as with external groups and organizations
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications (Required):

  • Earned degree in physical therapy
  • Earned doctoral degree
  • Hold an active unrestricted license as a physical therapist in an appropriate US jurisdiction
  • Have direct experience and working knowledge of the unique health care needs of West Virginia and greater Appalachia residents
  • Working experience as a clinical instructor and/or previous Director of Clinical Education providing direct supervision of students

Qualifications (Preferred):

  • Earned PhD or terminal academic equivalent
  • Eligible for appointment at the Associate or Professor rank
  • Earned Doctor of Physical Therapy clinical degree
  • Recognized as Board Certified Specialist recognized by the ABPTS
  • Recognized as a Credentialed Clinical Instructor (Level 2)
  • Experienced in distance education or equivalent
  • Developed research agenda
  • Have at least 3-years’ teaching experience in a Doctor of Physical Therapy program
  • Experienced in both course and curriculum development and assessment
  • Previous uniformed service
  • Have experience in a direct access clinical practice to include at least primary care, diagnostic imaging, and pharmacology privileges
  • Ability to easily and conveniently commute to campus on a regular basis
