Job Description

Reporting to Student Affairs, the Director of Accessibility Services is responsible for comprehensive leadership in maintaining compliance with federal and state disability laws and regulations by providing administrative oversight for all disability-related accommodations and services for students. The Director serves as a member of the Division of Student Affairs leadership team and contributes to SA and UNO strategic planning.


The work performed by the Director is complex and confidential, requiring comprehensive knowledge of student affairs, University policies, federal, state, and local laws and regulations, and a strong leadership presence on campus and within the community.


Advocacy and Student Support

  • Directs the implementation, integrity, and successful provision of reasonable student academic accommodations for students with documented disabilities, the Accommodative Testing Center for students with approved accommodations, programming, training on disability-related topics, and support services provided by the Accessibility Services staff.

  • Meets with students to perform intake sessions covering eligibility, process of developing and implementing accommodations plan, and documentation collection. Reviews disability-related documentation, including psychoeducational and neuropsychological reports to determine eligibility and appropriate accommodations under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Develops and implements individualized student accommodation plans based on diagnostic evaluation, other disability documentation, and the student self-report.

  • Liaises with third party service providers, such as captioning, interpreting, and orientation and mobility services to proactively implement time-sensitive accommodations

  • Represents Accessibility Services on committees and at summer orientations, open houses, and other campus and community events.

  • Coordinates disability-related student outreach supports which may include peer mentoring or support groups.

  • Collaborates with other student services departments to ensure that students with disabilities have equal access, including Residential Life on housing accommodations, and Registrar on assignment of class locations.

Academic Support

  • Provides test proctoring for students with testing accommodations; ensures exam security and confidentiality is maintained. 

  • Supports faculty and staff in providing reasonable accommodations to enhance learning environment for students with disabilities.

  • Develops and presents training for faculty/staff on best practices for supporting students with disabilities, including effective use of assistive technology.

  • Oversees orientation to Accessibility Services within the University community by providing information on services, resources, rights, responsibilities, and channels for current and prospective students to request and acquire assistance.

Administrative Support

  • Ensures the University’s compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), ADA Amendments Act (ADAAA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and other related laws, guidelines and standards as ADA Coordinator for students.

  • Responsible for the acquisition, maintenance, and coordination of the use of adaptive equipment, technology, and software used for students with disabilities.

  • Prepares and revises information sheets, brochures, handbooks, catalog, and relevant webpages. Maintains confidential student records.

  • Provides the community with timely updates regarding changes and important happenings regarding legal and other aspects of disability-related issues.

  • Prepares annual outcomes assessment for the Office of Accessibility Services, and prepares reports for appropriate campus personnel regarding utilization, student outcomes, and needs assessment.

  • Supervises coordinator, graduate and undergraduate student staff.

  • Occasional nights and weekends.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree.

  • Minimum of 5 years' relevant work experience.

  • Knowledge of Disability Laws, including Section 504 & 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.

  • Demonstrated ability to keep updated, accurate, and confidential records.

  • Demonstrated ability to build positive relationships and work professionally with a diverse group of faculty, staff, and students.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in disability studies, psychology, counseling, or related field.

  • Previous experience managing the accommodations interactive process in a post-secondary environment.

  • Direct supervisory experience of full-time staff.

  • Knowledge best practices for accommodations and digital accessibility.

  • Experience/background working with persons with disabilities, including demonstrated experience coordinating accommodations for students.

Physical Requirements

  • Sitting using near vision use for reading and computer use for extended periods of time.

  • Ability to visually and auditorily proctor exams and to ensure academic integrity guidelines during testing are followed (e.g., no notes, textbooks, outside assistance, use of phone or other similar devices, etc.)

  • Lifting (approximately 20 to 30 pounds), bending, and other physical exertion.
