UC San Diego Health has been caring for the community for more than 50 years. The system is one of five academic medical centers within the 10-campus University of California system, collectively known as UC Health. These medical centers comprise the fourth largest health care delivery system in California, and train nearly 50% of the state's medical students and medical residents. UC San Diego Health has a three part mission of clinical, research and teaching excellence. The system includes three hospitals: UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest with 390 beds, Jacobs Medical Center with 364 beds, and Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center with 54 beds. There are also numerous ambulatory and specialty clinics located throughout the county to deliver care to the entire region.

The Director, Center for Occupational and Environmental Medicine is responsible for leading operations and the provision of integrated and accessible occupational and environmental patient care services. This leader will partner with our world-class, board-certified faculty, to ensure exceptional care is provided to and in partnership with patients. This leader will help shape the future of occupational medicine at UC San Diego Health and guide our organization on this journey. The Director will collaborate with our providers to ensure optimal patient outcomes while promoting shared decision making at all levels to ensure a shared voice in practices, exchange of ideas, enhanced communication, and continually improved patient care services.

The Director will focus on achieving organizational objectives through the coordinated achievements of the COEM team. They will establish departmental goals and objectives and be able to function with autonomy. They will will manage the stewardship of human, financial, and physical resources in compliance with departmental and organizational goals and objectives.

Key Responsibilities:
· Manages the delivery of occupational medicine patient care, which typically includes nursing, and may include laboratory, radiology, etc. Facilitates the flow of patient care activities; may also participate in practice or center management operations.
· Manages the patient care delivery system to assure quality care, patient safety, standard work and compliance with internal policy, external regulations, and accepted practices across the continuum of care. Allocates environmental, technical, and staffing resources. May also manage the fiscal and administrative operations.
· Represents assigned clinics or centers on task forces or committees. Participates to develop new programs, review technology improvements, design quality improvement, and patient safety initiatives, etc.
· Develops staff in collaborative decision making and shared governance to ensure a shared voice in clinical care practice, exchange of ideas, enhanced communication, and continually improved clinical and patientcare outcomes.
· Manages patient care in a cost-effective manner, consistent with the financial goals of the organization. Plans and is accountable for the annual operative and capital budget for areas of responsibility.
· Responsible for employee recruitment, performance evaluation, progressive discipline and staff development. Develops a strong culture of teamwork to ensure the quality of daily operations, effective interdepartmental collaborations, and the timely achievement of objectives. Works with clinical educators and leadership to evaluate core competencies in nursing and other clinical care for unit.
· Works collaboratively with Labor Relations on bargaining unit issues and contract negotiations at the local level.
· Facilitates and oversees resolution of human resources, labor relations, and employee safety and risk management issues.
· Keeps abreast of and implements new or changing patient care standards of practice, scope of practice, competency development and assessment, policies and procedures, and new programs. Collaborates with physicians and develops proposals for improvements to clinic services, policies, or procedures.
· Collaborates and provides input, on marketing, facilities, and fiscal planning. Drafts business plans to introduce quality improvements to clinical service delivery in accordance with best practices.
· Collaborates with an interdisciplinary team of health care clinicians in efforts to develop healthcare policies, practice standards, and improve services.
· Monitors expenditures and the annual budgets for patient care services and/or clinic operations.
· Determines staffing needs and plans. Monitors performance of clinic or center services. Coordinates activities with other clinics, centers, units, and/or departments in regard to patient care.
· Other duties as assigned.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing required, plus seven (7+) or more years of relevant experience.

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the state of California

  • Strong clinic/center patient care management skills. Practice management knowledge in scheduling, customer-service methods, regulatory compliance, accreditation requirements, and health information technology.

  • Broad knowledge of patient population served and the requirements for the delivery of services.

  • BART or BLS at time of hire with commitment to get BART within six (6) months of hire date.

  • Master's degree in health administration, business or a related field
  • Ten (10+) or more years of relevant experience, including progressive leadership experience
  • Five (5+) or more years in a manager or higher level leadership role
  • Patient care experience in an occupational medicine environment
  • Experience organizing and conducting large scale employee health events
  • Experience managing and submitting occupational medicine regulatory reports
  • Must pass a background check.
  • Must pass physical, drug screen and TB test.
  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $124,400 - $243,600 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $59.58 - $116.67

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
