JOB DETAILS:

The Director of Multicultural Student Services will provide overall leadership and administrative responsibility for the Multicultural Student Services (MSS) office at UW-Stout. Their responsibilities include leading the development and execution of strategic initiatives, managing the unit's budget, and supervising a team of five staff to foster student success and sense of belonging for historically underrepresented students. The director plays a vital role in ensuring the implementation and delivery of student services that contribute to the retention, persistence, and graduation of underrepresented students. Additionally, the director will serve as an advocate for student development, ensuring that students are aware of and effectively utilizing campus services. This position will actively promote leadership opportunities for both students and MSS staff while guiding the development of multicultural education programs. This position will report to the Executive Director of Student Inclusion and Belonging.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum / Required  

  • One of the following: 
    • Master's degree with a minimum of 3 years of progressive administrative experience in multicultural affairs or the management of programs serving marginalized and historically underrepresented populations, or 
    • Bachelor's degree with 5 or more years of such experience. 
  • Experience in the supervision and evaluation of professional staff. 
  • Demonstrated professional experience working with and supporting diverse populations, identities, and backgrounds with significant contact with historically underrepresented/underserved populations. 
  • Evidence of significant programmatic experience such as but not limited to planning, event management, program evaluation. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of social justice, intersectionality, and marginalized identities.

Highly Desired

  • Focused work that demonstrates knowledge of effective retention initiatives for underrepresented racial and ethnic minority students. 
  • Proven experience in building and collaborating with internal and external partners/stakeholders. 
  • Demonstrated assessment and evaluation experience from development through analysis. 
  • Budget management experience. 
  • Experience initiating and managing fundraising and/or grant opportunities.  
  • Evidence of successful problem solving and conflict resolution skills.  
  • Proven computer skills in working with record keeping databases (i.e. Peoplesoft, Navigate or similar system) and data analysis skills. 


RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Provides leadership and direction to the Multicultural Student Services (MSS) office. 
  • Directs strategic planning initiatives and establishes unit objectives to ensure appropriate use of resources. 
  • Develops short- and long-range goals for MSS, and work with staff to develop and reach goals.  
  • Develops operating policies and procedures to comply with regulations, institutional policies, and unit objectives.  
  • Recruits, hires, trains, and supervises staff, graduate assistants, and/or student workers. 
  • Develops and implements the unit personnel resource allocation plan including hiring, training, supervision, and resolution of non-routine personal issues.  
  • Provides leadership for programs and services supporting the successful college transition, retention, and graduation of historically underrepresented students. 
  • Serves as the unit liaison by collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to advocate for multicultural students and providing organizational information. 
  • Develops positive relationships and collaborates with other campus agencies in the development and/or support of programs and services which retain, empower, and promote the success of underrepresented racial and ethnic minority students. 
  • Collaborates with offices within an intersectionality and social justice framework that promotes inclusive excellence and an equitable environment for underrepresented students.  
  • Upon admittance, works with the MSS team in helping underrepresented students matriculate to the university.  
  • Works to advance college priorities for improved student access and retention of historically underrepresented students (Stoutward Bound, Multicultural Living Community, retention outreach initiatives, etc). 
  • Provides direct service to MSS students as an advisor, mentor, and advocate.  
  • Serves as an advocate for multicultural students and empowers student voices and ensures systems are in place to share accomplishments and implement positive change as well as address challenges faced by multicultural students. 
  • Nurtures leadership opportunities for underrepresented students. 
  • Develops and oversees multiple MSS budgets; ensures budgetary accountability and compliance.  
  • Provides oversight to external funding initiatives including foundation funds.  
  • As appropriate, facilitates grant writing and administration to augment budget and services maintains database and analysis systems that support accountability reporting. 
  • Oversees, monitors, and evaluates programs delivered and sponsored by MSS. 
  • Assures compliance with institutional, system, and local/state/federal laws, policies and practices related to UW System initiatives, scholarship funds and federal grant programs (Lawton Grant and Advance Opportunity Grant).  
  • Advises MSS affinity groups (directly and indirectly).  
  • Serves as a member of the Chancellor Coalition Committee, Bias Incident Response Team, and other committees. 
  • Serves as multicultural/disadvantaged coordinator as established by the UW System. 
  • Other duties as assigned. 
  • This position will require occasional evening and weekend work.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The salary range for this position is $65,000-$70,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience.  The UW System provides an excellent benefits package including participation in the Wisconsin State retirement plan, demonstrating our commitment to the diverse needs of our employees.
