Director, Merit Workshop Program

The Department of Chemistry seeks a full-time (12-month) academic professional as the Director, Merit Workshop Program. This position has overall responsibility for coordinating minority affairs at the undergraduate level in the Department of Chemistry, including recruitment and training of teaching assistants who are well versed in cooperative learning and recruitment and advising of students into the Merit Workshop Program.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Plan new programs for the Merit Workshop Program and employ innovative methods in cooperative learning.
Supervise teaching assistants and undergraduate students for the Merit Workshop Program. This includes: Recruit, hire, train, set work schedules/priorities, evaluate, discipline and terminate.
Teach and advise undergraduate students. Expected teaching load is two (2) instructional courses each academic year. Advises merit students on merit classes and course loads.
Seek and secure outside governmental and private funding to sustain the growth of the program.
Design and execute studies to measure effectiveness of the program.
Attend professional meetings to give presentations and promote the program.
Maintain close cooperative contact with minority retention activities on campus and with departmental faculty and staff that are served by the Merit Workshop Program in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the program and monitor retention activities to make any necessary improvements.
- Master's Degree in Chemical Education, Chemistry, or related natural sciences or engineering discipline
- Experience in teaching a variety of Chemistry courses at various levels.
- Experience in education administration.
- Supervisory experience.
- Experience working with underrepresented students.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Strong oral communication skills.
Salary and Start Date: Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Starting date is as soon as possible after closing date.
