The University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) invites applications and nominations for the position of Director, Institute for Genome Sciences.

The University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM), chartered in 1807 as the College of Medicine of Maryland, is the fifth oldest and the first public medical school in the country. From the beginning, the School was part of the University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB), the founding campus of the University System of Maryland. Today, its 3,100 faculty include members of the National Academy of Medicine and the National Academy of Sciences, and a distinguished two-time winner of the Albert E. Lasker Award in Medical Research.

The next Director will be an accomplished, collaborative, and visionary scientist or physician- scientist leader. They will have an established research program and a solid track record of federally funded or comparable research support. They will have a deep knowledge of the important directions in discovery and innovation in genomic research, including an appreciation of how genomics will transform patient care. They will have the opportunity to articulate and execute a vision for the IGS, taking advantage of the existing strengths across the UMSOM, UMB, and UMMS campuses. Candidates with expertise in medical genetics and genomics, especially in cancer, cardiovascular or neurological genetics, metabolic disease, or computation health are encouraged to apply, although any experienced and qualified candidates will be considered. New opportunities for collaborative success for the IGS have recently emerged with the recruitment of a new Director for the NCI designated Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center, Dr. Taofeek Owonikoko who is passionate about expanding cancer genomic research in the Center. Additionally, the IGS Director will find the new University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing UM-IHC an extraordinary resource for integrating genomics with artificial intelligence and cutting-edge bioinformatics in the context of a patient population database that includes 17 million patient encounters and >1 trillion datapoints.

The new Director will have held a leadership role in a large organization with a clear ability to foster, support and drive programmatic research expansion in a complex academic environment, ensuring that the academic and clinical activities of UMSOM continue to bring value to its many internal and external stakeholders. They will have a passion for promoting a collaborative service culture that further elevates IGS as a nationally recognized leader for superior quality data sequencing, analytics, and clinical outcomes. The Director will have a deep understanding of how to leverage the excellent bench science at the UMSOM to foster success within the IGS. Applicants with experience utilizing population health and effective health care delivery systems to bring state of the art care to historically underserved populations are particularly encouraged to apply. Critical to their success, the new Director must be an expert at building positive collegial connections with internal and external stakeholders. They will have a high emotional intelligence (EQ) and cultural intelligence (CQ), and be a consensus-oriented team player, who displays “respectful courage” and is highly influential in their ability to encourage people to move forward. They must be operationally savvy with business acumen to manage operations and maintain the financial health of IGS.

Qualified candidates will hold an MD, PhD, or equivalent. Candidates must be eligible for a faculty appointment at the Associate or Professor level in the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Clinically active candidates will be board certified and eligible for licensure in the state of Maryland.
