Director, Environmental Health and Safety

The University of Tennessee Knoxville’s Department of Environmental Health and Safety is accepting applications for Director of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS). Reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Public Safety, the Director will provide leadership and direction in the planning, development, budgetary, implementation and evaluation of the University’s EHS programs. The Director will lead and manage staff in the major safety, health and environmental programs and serves as the safety office for the UT Graduate School of Medicine.

The director is expected to lead the operational management of the Environmental Health and Safety department employees and operating budget consisting of the following functional units: occupational health safety, laboratory safety, radiation safety, industrial worker safety, environmental programs, and fire and life safety. The position will be responsible for administering, maintaining and directing all departmental policies, including fiscal, personnel and compliance.

 



Qualifications

 

Overview of Duties and Responsibilities

·       Establishes goals, objectives, performance measures and metrics for the campus in compliance with applicable city, county, state and federal regulations and campus policies related to health and safety.

·       Serves as the liaison internally with university departments and leads or participates on committees regarding environmental health and safety concerns; externally to the regulatory (e.g. TOSHA, EPA) and non-regulatory (e.g. NFPA, CSHEMA) agencies.

·       Participates in the annual peer reviews for the UT Knoxville campus, Graduate School of Medicine, Knoxville, and other UT campuses.

·       Collaborates with campus stakeholders including academic leadership, faculty, Principal Investigators, Risk Management, Emergency Management, campus Police, Facilities Services and others to enhance the institution's safety culture.

·       Responsible for supervising, directing, and evaluating the EHS staff.

·       Establishes specific, measurable departmental and individual operational plans and goals for each unit.

·       Full authority to commit funds for the purpose of supporting the health and safety compliance program.

·       Oversees Inspections, compliance management, and development & delivery of training.

·       Develops policies and procedures in accordance with recognized standards of performance.

Minimum Qualifications

·       Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and 10 years’ progressive experience in an EHS-related position, ideally in higher education.

·       5 years of management responsibility, ideally in higher education. 

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

·       Knowledge of environmental health and safety subjects.

·       Strong written and oral communication skills.

·       Ability to communicate with the public, regulatory, administration, and academic audiences.

·       Ability to analyze data supporting safety efforts and to transform that data into compliance documentation, written policies and procedures, and to affect solutions to problems as they are presented.

·       Ability to manage EHS programs and personnel.

 Preferred Qualifications

·       Master’s degree in business administration, public health, safety, environmental compliance, industrial hygiene, environmental health, environmental science, science or closely related field.

·       Strong background in one or more of the following: industrial hygiene, occupational safety, safety management, safety engineering, environmental compliance, environmental science, or hazardous materials management.

·       One or more of the following certifications is desirable: Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), Professional Engineer (PE) or other recognized certifications.
