General summary

The Director will develop a vision, strategy, and plan for enhancing the career development experiences for university staff in the model of Life Design. This leader will oversee the creation of programs, tools, and other initiatives that help staff to explore career interests, develop skills and competencies, connect and build networks with peers and colleagues, and navigate the university's career architecture and internal recruitment processes. The ultimate goal is to enhance the internal mobility of our staff.


The Director will partner with a variety of colleagues across the university and will lead a team of Life Design consultants and programming staff in the creation, delivery, and enhancement of scalable program offerings and tools. These offerings will focus on key areas of

  • Teaching the fundamentals of Life Design and other career navigation skills (e.g. networking, resume writing, interviewing, etc.)
  • Tools to help staff navigate job families, roles, assessment of skills and competencies, etc.
  • Programming around networking, mentoring, informational interviews etc., with a particular focus on job-family (e.g. Research Administration, IT, Finance, Student Services, etc.) specific offerings.
  • New programs to help employees experiment and assess interests including job shadowing and short-term gig assignments.


The Director will oversee the marketing of all of these offerings as well as the process of collecting, analyzing, and reporting engagement and outcomes data and continue to evolve the organization towards a vision of scalability, outcomes-based performance, and broad impact on JHU and its staff employees.


Specific duties & responsibilities

  • Develop a vision, strategy, and plan that builds on the strategy of integrating life design, staff development, career navigation, and creation of networks to enhance internal mobility for staff.
  • Lead a team of life design consultants and programmers to plan, design, and execute courses, workshops, programs, content, and digital resources to help staff achieve their life ambitions, particularly around their career at JHU.
  • Engage with staff and others to increase networking, mentoring, experiential learning, and career opportunities for staff.
  • Recommend and develop tools and resources to enhance the mentoring experience of staff.
  • Customize offerings and approaches given the unique needs of staff based on areas of job family interest.
  • Recommend the purchase and implementation of technical resources for supporting programming across all of JHU including vendor negotiation, installation of technology, and training for administrators and staff who will use these tools.
  • Hire, train, supervise, and motivate the team staff life design team to scale efforts for a positive life design and professional development experience for staff.
  • Set expectations for the use of social media, digital outlets, and other communications vehicles to establish an exciting brand, tell the story, and the impact of the Office of Staff Life Design. Engage directly in these areas as well and serve as a thought leader at Johns Hopkins University and in higher education.
  • Coordinate with colleagues in Human Resources and the office of institutional research to collect, analyze, and report outcomes data relative to staff having a satisfactory experience and achieving their life ambitions, their internal movement within the university, and their overall retention and engagement.
  • Develop strategic relationships with key university leaders (Office of Diversity and Inclusion, JHU Staff Advisory Council, Employee Resource Groups, Human Resources, DBOs, administrators, etc.) to facilitate continuous needs assessment and the effective implementation of staff life design and professional development for staff.
  • Meet regularly with administrators at the university whose offices provide career and life design as well as mentoring and employer engagement for students to encourage coordination and identify the intersections of programs and initiatives, as well as the sharing of best practices.



Special knowledge, skills, and abilities

  • By way of experience, evidence of ability to develop and execute programs, courses, events, and content to scale impact across various constituent groups.
  • By way of experience, evidence of ability to engage, teach, and energize various constituent groups.
  • Knowledge of higher educational leadership and administration, higher education structure and governance and factors that affect decision-making at private research institutions.
  • Understanding of nationally recognized practices, trends, and procedures for life design and career development, especially the unique needs of employees.
  • Demonstrated skill in fostering new institutional relationships, and marshaling professional networks with senior leadership and staff.
  • Experience in developing and implementing effective assessment methods and articulating strategic priorities.
  • Effective user of social media and digital outlets to engage multiple audiences, strengthen individual and organizational brand, scale impact, and influence public opinion.
  • Ability to provide energetic leadership, with the ability to develop and execute a vision, and effectively manage, supervise, and develop staff.
  • Ability to demonstrate capacity to work effectively with persons from diverse backgrounds to promote an inclusive campus and community culture.
  • Demonstrated skill in effective negotiation, building consensus, and influencing institutional decisions.
  • Be influential and manage change in a highly decentralized institution.
  • Analyze information and situations and make independent judgments and decisions.
  • Listen and communicate convincingly in written and verbal formats.
  • Manage and delegate workload and workflow under the pressure of deadlines.
  • Set priorities in a complex environment and represent the institution's perspective to external entities.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years directly related experience. Should include 7 years experience in managing staff.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Experience working in Human Resources in the areas of staff development, preferably in higher education.
  • Familiarity with the Life Design framework of individual development
  • Strong multicultural competency; extensive experience and working knowledge in diversity, equity, and inclusion.



Technical qualifications or specialized certifications

  • Life Design certification or training is highly preferred.
