Job Description


The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med) invites applications for the role of Director, Assessment. The Director of Assessment is a leader who works with faculty and administrators within UNR Med to develop and implement effective assessment strategies that support student outcomes, and to design and implement evaluation strategies that lead to curricular and program improvement. The Director is responsible for collaboration with the Director of Curriculum in leading and shaping assessment processes, keeping abreast of national best practices in assessment, helping to foster a collaborative culture, developing assessment staff, thereby ensuring continuous improvement of the quality of education at UNR Med. The Director serves as an in-house expert on assessment and provides advice and guidance to the faculty, the curriculum committees, and the Associate Dean of Curricular Affairs. The position reports to the Associate Dean of Curricular Affairs. Examples of specific responsibilities include: 


  • Lead the program of assessment across all phases of the MD program, including defining the philosophy of assessment; continuous quality improvement of assessment; continually advocate for best practices in assessment in the MD program   

  • Implement assessment strategies for the undergraduate medical education program that will inform curricular decision-making and continuous quality improvement efforts 

  • Work with block directors, teaching faculty, and content directors to ensure all assessment materials (e.g., quizzes, exams, objective structured clinical examinations) are appropriately balanced, clearly written, and correctly formatted for use in online assessment software. 

  • Supervise, train, and develop employees; manage employee performance. 

  • Provide sound analysis of assessment data through various analyses and assessment reports 

  • Analyzes and reports student data for use in completing the Data Collection Instrument (DCI) necessary for accreditation by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). Leads continuous quality improvement of assessment and evaluation processes to align with LCME requirements. 

  • Develop and present mid-year summary reports on performance and feedback for block directors to reference when reviewing their curriculum and planning improvements for the next academic year. 

  • Inform the UNR Med academic community of curriculum practices and innovations that lead to improved student learning, program outcomes and administrative services through updates provided at meetings, via electronic communication, curricular retreats, and committees  

  • Co-facilitate and plan faculty development with the Office for Faculty. 

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to motivate and hold accountable a team of assessment professionals, collaborate successfully with faculty and students, and track and implement CQI measures. Competency in data analysis, tech literacy, and detail orientation are a must. Additionally, the person in this role must be able to manage difficult and confidential conversations, demonstrate cultural humility, and successfully manage change under pressure.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree and four years of professional work experience OR

Master's Degree and two years of professional work experience

Related Experience:

Experience in program evaluation and/or assessment of higher education academic programs

Total Compensation

The total compensation package includes a competitive salary, moving allowance (if applicable), a rich retirement plan, health insurance options that include dental and vision, life insurance, thirty (30) days of sick leave provided upon start date and two (2) days of sick leave accrued per full month after the first year of service, two (2) days of annual leave accrued each full month, along with many other benefits.
