Director, Assessment - Department of Undergraduate Medical Education

Wayne State University is searching for an experienced Director, Assessment - Department of Undergraduate Medical Education at its Detroit campus location.

Essential functions (job duties):

Oversees and manages the assessment program for the Medical Doctor degree program. Ensures that the assessment program complies with all internal and external (i.e. Liaison Committee on Medical Education) standards.

Oversees the development and implementation of faculty development for exam item creation for both summative and formative assessment in order to ensure valid and reliable examinations.  This includes but is not limited to training faculty in the use of the National Board of Medical Examiners Customized Assessment Service.  Also includes the development of new and innovative assessment methods for use in the Medical Doctor curriculum. These include but not limited to essays, video-based assessments and extended matching.  Also includes the identification and acquisition of additional examination resources for faculty and staff.   Encompasses examination software, training materials and question banks. Also disseminates and trains individuals in the use of these resources, if required.

Directs and oversees the school’s Testing Services, which includes supervision of the Supervisor of Testing Services.  The school’s Testing Services function is responsible for the creation, delivery and scoring of assessments across all four years of the Medical Doctor curriculum.

Manages all examination systems. Includes managing computer testing rooms, computer hardware and all associated testing software.  Additionally, works with C&IT groups to ensure computers used for testing are updated and working properly.

Serves as Chief Executive Proctor with the National Board of Medical Examiners for Wayne State University’s School of Medicine.

Performs other related duties as assigned.


Unique duties:
Qualifications:

Education:   Doctorate degree

Doctorate degree in Education, Assessment, Evaluation or a related field from an accredited college or university.

Experience:   Specialist (minimum 5 years of job-related experience)

Five or more years of experience in higher education assessment or overall assessment design.  Experience in addition to post graduate education will be considered.  Prior management experience strongly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

 Ability to implement methodologies to support continuous improvement.

·        Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.  Provides effective feedback to employees to promote positive outcomes.  Communicates specific needs for office to other administrative areas that impact the department’s operational goals.  Provides outstanding customer service to students, faculty and administration.

·        Ability to delegate work, set clear direction and manage workflow. Skilled in motivating employees to improve performance and skills development.  Foster teamwork within the department and with related units.

·         Strong organizational skills including the ability to plan and coordinate resources and manage multiple projects simultaneously. 

·        Ability to demonstrate close attention to details and accurately complete work. Ability to evaluate and assess accuracy of information and data are essential. 

·         Proficient in Microsoft office suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint.  Ability to troubleshoot common computer and software issues. 

·         Familiar with computer based exam software such as ExamSoft.  Knowledge of Banner, STARS and other university administrative systems.

Working conditions:

Oversees and manages the assessment program for the Medical Doctor Degree program at the Wayne State University School of Medicine. This includes several key functions. Provides oversight of the school’s Testing Services, which oversees examinations to the school’s 1,200 students across all four years of the curriculum. Additionally, this position ensures that the school’s assessment program is compliant with all internal and external standards including those specified by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education. Utilizes a continuous quality improvement approach to assessment. This position is expected to improve the assessment program continually through the development and implementation of faculty development services. Reports to Assistant Dean.
