Job Summary
Support Extension's public engagement and outreach mission by coordinating our digital accessibility initiatives. Extension's Digital Accessibility Coordinator will include efforts in creating accessible and inclusive content guidelines, training staff, coordinating remediation efforts, and building support systems and procedures to ensure compliance with current standards in digital accessibility.
Duties & Responsibilities

  • Digital accessibility consulting
  • Helps project teams design and evaluate U of I Extension websites, applications, and digital content for accessibility and inclusion.
  • Tests websites, applications, and content using industry-supported digital accessibility tools. Develops reports and helps content owners interpret findings and plan remediation steps.
  • Prepares organization-wide reports on accessibility efforts, progress, roadblocks, and problem areas for leadership and managers.
  • Training
  • Develops online and in-person training for content creators on best practices in digital accessibility standards and delivers consistent training as staff and standards evolve.
  • Maintains digital accessibility toolset and trains IT and Marketing/Communications staff on the use and best practices as new tools are incorporated into the content publishing workflow.
  • QA/QC Process and Procedures
  • Work with Extension professionals to ensure websites, PDFs, videos, and other digital content are within WCAG 2.2 standards, compliant with the Illinois Information Technology Accessibility act (IITAA) and meet University of Illinois and Extension Digital Accessibility policies.
  • Develops and maintains intake and tracking procedures for digital accessibility pre-publication reviews, requests for help, and requests for accommodations.
  • Contributes to documentation of tools, processes, and procedures.
  • Team Collaboration and Project Management
  • Participate and represent Extension in communities of practice (ITIL), workshops, conferences, events and other partnerships at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
  • Work across a portfolio of websites, applications, and vendor contracts to establish deliverables and track progress, and as a conduit between Extension IT, Extension MarComm, field staff, and campus liaisons.
  • Keeps clients and colleagues informed of project status and accomplishments.

Additional Physical Demands
To perform the functions of this position, the employee will be required to perform work both within an office and outside in the communities that are served, and must have the capability to travel from one location to the other in a timely fashion. Employee is responsible for securing personal transportation. A valid driver's license is preferred. Some work will be required during evenings and/or weekends. When working, the employee may be exposed to a variety of environmental factors to include, but not limited to, hot or cold weather, exposure to noise and allergens, and uneven ground. In performing the functions of this position, the employee may be subjected to various mental and physical demands as well to include, but not limited to, independently traveling to and performing work at different locations, lifting and moving items that may occasionally weigh up to forty (40) pounds and frequently weigh up to twenty (20) pounds, and twisting, pushing and pulling movements. Specialty Factors
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of work experience in IT-related functions such as hardware/software support, programming, network design, network engineering, IT systems integration, or closely related field. College coursework which includes Information Technology (IT), IT Management, Programming, IT systems, or a closely related discipline may be substituted as follows: 30 semester hours equals one (1) year, Associate's Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen (18) months, 90 semester hours equals two (2) years, Bachelor's Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years).
  • Demonstrated digital content creation experience.
  • Demonstrated experience working with content management systems.
  • Demonstrated experience training or teaching technical topics to non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated experience with digital accessibility tools and methods such as document remediation, screen readers, video captioning, audio descriptions, and/or website accessibility assessments.
    Preferred Qualifications
    Drupal, WordPress, Moodle, or PHP experience. Experience creating technical documentation and providing end-user support. Experience working in a higher education environment especially related to accessibility of teaching and learning materials. Effective meeting facilitation and presentation skills. Experience participating in diverse workgroups.
    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    • Working knowledge of WCAG 2.2, WAI-ARIA, HTML5 and related web standards. Ability to work independently, remotely, and as part of a team. Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal and communication skills
    • Understanding of the techniques used to make websites, electronic documents, and media content accessible and inclusive. Basic fluency with assistive technologies such as JAWS, NVDA, ZoomText, Dragon Naturally Speaking, etc., and understanding of the experience for those using assistive technologies - or other accessibility features. Knowledge of the mission, goals, and purpose of public engagement and outreach within the land grant system.

    Appointment Information
    This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5031 - Information Technology Technical Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. The salary range for this position starts at $75,000.
