About the Opportunity

Summary

The School of Architecture in the College of Arts, Media and Design at Northeastern University seeks applications for the 2024-25 Design Research and Teaching Fellowship, a one-year visiting appointment that provides emerging scholars, practitioners, and advocates of the built environment with the opportunity to develop a body of design research based on a specific area of interest while contributing to the vibrant intellectual culture of the school. The position is a non-tenure track appointment at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor and is scheduled to commence in August, 2024.

The fellowship supports teaching related to the candidate’s area of interest, as well as modest resources for the development of independent research and creative work. Fellows will have the opportunity to design new curricula for studio and seminar courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, as well as to teach within the School of Architecture’s core curriculum. They will be provided with opportunities to share their ongoing fellowship work with the wider Northeastern community through lectures, presentations, and exhibitions throughout the academic year. In particular, fellows are invited to engage and collaborate with the diverse faculty body within the School of Architecture, across the College of Arts, Media and Design, and with other colleges and centers across the University. Candidates from a variety of backgrounds, training, and perspectives are encouraged to apply for this position.

Responsibilities

The teaching responsibilities of the fellowship include three courses taught during the 2024-25 academic year. At least one of the courses will take the form of a research-centric design studio that builds directly on the Fellow’s research project, and provides a way for them to draw connections between their teaching, research, and creative practice. Other courses include design studios, research seminars or representation courses within the School of Architecture’s core curriculum where the Fellow’s unique perspective on the built environment will contribute towards the existing strengths of the department on areas such as sustainable design, urban ecologies, collective housing, public health, and material experimentation.  

As the culmination of the fellowship year, the Fellow will be invited to deliver a lecture as part of the School of Architecture’s public lecture series and/or to prepare an exhibition or other event that showcases the research, teaching, and/or creative work that they conducted while in residence at the school.

Qualifications

Candidates must hold a terminal degree (PhD, Master’s, or equivalent) in their proposed area of research by the appointment start date. Applicants with prior studio teaching experience are strongly encouraged to apply.

• 1-page Cover Letter outlining your interests in the position.

• A 1-2 page proposal for a year-long design research project that will be developed as part of the fellowship. The proposal must include a description of how this project can be explored through a research studio curriculum.

• A curriculum vitae

• A portfolio of recent work (not to exceed 20 pages and 50MB maximum)

• Names and contact information for 3 references. Letters of recommendation will only be requested for finalists.
