About the Department
The Communication Technologies Office (ComTech) provides a variety of voice, data, and video communications services to members of the University community. These services include designing, constructing, and managing all campus electronic and physical network infrastructure which supports voice, data and video communications, processing requests for new/changed service, repair service, student telecom services, voice mail services, cable TV services, infrastructure modifications and additions, and provision of telecommunications equipment, materials, and hardware to the campus. ComTech has overall responsibility for both intra-campus data network as well as the data network connections linking NC State University with the Internet and other off campus networks.
Essential Job Duties
General Scope of Duties:
  • This position is responsible for consultation, investigation, evaluation and planning, and design related to communications infrastructure design projects in campus buildings.
  • This position will serve as a design engineer primarily for wireless coverage in campus buildings. Design could include a variety of network infrastructure projects, including but not limited to: physical layer infrastructure, wireless systems, and layer 2 (network) infrastructure.
  • This position provides project management oversight, manages implementation of projects/plans according to codes, regulations, and ComTech standards, and creates designs that may be technically complex as evidenced by a high number of variables and inter-related considerations.
  • Work in this position is performed independently, and projects are of a moderate to high degree of complexity.

This is a Time-limited EHRA position with the expected duration of 2-3 years for the Wireless Design Project.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in the Engineering discipline related to the area of assignment; or and equivalent combination of training and experience.

Some positions may require licensure by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Other Required Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of basic data networking and telecommunications principles.
  • Demonstrated experience in engineering design.
  • Some knowledge of AutoCAD software.
  • Working knowledge of wireless design principles.
  • Demonstrated experience with Ekahau design software.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in engineering design.
  • BICSIRCDD certification preferred.
