The University of Pittsburgh Deputy Chief of Police will serve as a senior adviser and leader on all law enforcement matters and assumes full responsibility for command of the department in the absence of the Chief of Police, including the main campus police department, several regional police departments, and  main campus communications room. Assists in the development and management of the department(s) annual budget, communicating and executing training to the campus community on emergency plans, coordinating law enforcement involvement in required annual drills/exercises, and assisting in the development and maintenance of emergency preparedness and business continuity plans. The Deputy Chief will also be responsible for managing field operations for special events and/or during emergencies with outside agencies.



Job Summary

Serves as a senior law enforcement officer for the University. Directs lower-level law enforcement officers, coordinates their activities, and ensures all enforcement officers adhere to relevant standards. Enforces state laws and University regulations to prevent criminal activity. Performs budgetary functions, prepares security briefings, and implements department goals in accordance with security procedures.


Essential Functions 

• Directs lower-level law enforcement officers and coordinates their activities to ensure proper security throughout campus. Oversees and manages the assignment and support of University of Pittsburgh Police personnel, main campus and several regional campus police departments, including the main campus communication room. Assesses critical emergency situations, makes effective decisions, and takes appropriate action.
• Plans training programs with updated industry policies and procedures. Responsible for communicating and training the main campus and regional campuses community on emergency plans, coordinating law enforcement involvement in required annual drills/exercises with the Director of Environmental Health and Safety, and assisting in the development/refinement of emergency preparedness and business continuity plans.
• Enforces state laws and University regulations to prevent criminal activity.
• Ensures all law enforcement officers adhere to appropriate standards and penalizes staff as deemed necessary.
• For main campus and regional campuses police operations: assists with developing and managing the department(s) annual budget including implementation of action plans and performance monitoring against established benchmarks.
• Prepares and presents relevant reports and security briefings for department and community benefit.
• Reviews security procedures regularly and works to implement department goals/strategies in accordance with these policies. For main campus and regional campuses police operations: coordinates and manages special projects in the areas of anti-terrorism, infrastructure protection, criminal investigation, coordination with regional law enforcement agencies, etc.
• Stands as a law enforcement representative and keeps other departments and outside agencies updated with any applicable departmental revisions.


Physical Effort 

Moderate physical effort required. May be required to stand/move for several hours at a time. May be required to move objects up to 50 pounds with or without assistance of equipment. Must be able to carry out any physical demands necessary to ensure the safety of the campus and any other assigned area.

Additional details about Required Licensure/Certification Baccalaureate; 10+ years experience; Master's degree a plus. Ten years in a law enforcement department which includes at least three years of progressive supervisory public safety experience in a unionized environment. Candidates must be certified or capable of being certified under PA Act 120 and have or be able to obtain a valid PA Driver’s license.
Work Schedule Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m - 4:30 p.m.
Work Arrangement On-Campus: Teams that work on campus, in an office, or in a lab.
