Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The UNC Adams School of Dentistry Division of Pediatric and Public Health provides oral health care for individuals from infancy through adolescence, and promotes the prevention of oral disease. The Pediatric Dentistry discipline is committed to the treatment of children, adolescents and special needs patients while balancing teaching, scholarship, patient care, research and professional service activities.
Position Summary
Pediatric dentistry is the clinical specialty for the treatment of children, adolescents, special needs patients and high-risk patients with complex medical conditions. This specialty requires a wide spectrum of knowledge, interests and skills applied for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of child and adolescent patients, as these patients are undergoing changes in physical, mental and emotional growth. UNC Pediatric Dentistry balances teaching, scholarship, patient care, research and professional service activities. Faculty are involved in didactic, pre-clinical, clinical, continuing education and extramural teaching. Students include dental students, pediatric residents, public health master’s degree students and PhD students. 
The dental hygienist is a primary care oral health professional, licensed in dental hygiene to provide education, assessment, administrative, diagnostic, preventive and therapeutic services that support overall health through the promotion of optimal oral health. 
The dental hygienist surgery coordinator position serves as the UNC Hospitals Dental Surgery Coordinator for Pediatric Dentistry Services. This position is responsible for managing all aspects of surgical coordination for patients referred for dental treatment under conscious sedation or general anesthesia. The coordinator triages requests and referrals to schedule procedures from dental and physician offices and schedules the surgery procedure according to established guidelines ensuring that all the appropriate clinical and insurance coding information is collected. This position also coordinates and manages multi-disciplinary team care with other UNC Hospital services including but not limited to, ENT, Oncology, Pulmonary and Plastic Surgery for high-risk patients with complex medical conditions. This position is directly responsible for numerous patient, resident, and faculty interactions daily that help ensure clinical and fiscal success. 
Specific duties include: 
Coordination and management of dental care for patients between pediatric dentistry and all pediatric specialties within ASOD, UNC School of Medicine and UNC Hospitals. 
Manage patient encounters with referring doctors to obtain all required diagnostic information for surgery to prevent negative outcomes. 
Communicating with families/guardians of pediatric patients to review surgery protocols and answer questions regarding financial obligations. 
Obtain prior approvals for both medical and dental insurance authorizations. 
Review and disseminate surgery reports to referring doctors in a timely manner following surgery. 
Supervise work study students, temporary employees, and student volunteers. 
This position will be responsible for maintaining a full OR schedule, maximizing the time slots assigned by UNC Hospital. This will serve to increase learning opportunities for residents and students.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Licensed to practice as a Dental Hygienist in the State of North Carolina.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Must be licensed to practice as a dental hygienist in North Carolina. 
Must follow all regulatory requirements, as well as the policies and procedures of the School of Dentistry including, license maintenance and CPR certification. 
All trainings are to be maintained such as OSHA, Infection Control, Security training etc.
Ability to deal tactfully with the public and to exercise good judgment in appraising situations and making decisions.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Knowledge of EPIC/Wisdom patient record system.
Experience in insurance prequalification process.
Experience in patient care coordination.
