Position Title Dean of Campus Life

Position Summary
The Dean of Campus Life is responsible for the fostering and implementation of the Student Life vision which is focused on character development and personal formation to support the mission of the University of the Incarnate Word. Specifically, position will oversee all aspects of Student Life on campus, set and carry out disciplinary policy as found in the Student Handbook, and promote and communicate with the student body. The Dean of Campus Life is a member of the President’s Advisory Council and as such assists in the management and promotion of the University’s mission and vision. The Dean of Campus Life reports to the Vice President for Strategy and Enrollment.

Description of Job Duty
  • Supervises all officers of Campus Engagement, Campus Wellness, Housing and Residence Life, and Student Advocacy & Accountability departments;
  • Participates in the President’s Advisory Council and is involved in the University Strategic Planning, Budgetary, and Institutional Effectiveness processes;
  • Oversees and executes the annual revision and publication of the Student Handbook and Student Organization Handbook, working with Residence Life, Campus Engagement, and Student Advocacy & Accountability;
  • Ensures the enforcement of the Student Code of Conduct;
  • Works with the Director of Residence Life in the selection of Resident Assistants;
  • Oversees the activities on campus with special attention to TABC regulations;
  • Works closely with food service to resolve any student complaints or concerns;
  • Establishes, monitors, and enforces policies related to student organizations;
  • Develops, monitors, adjusts, and manages the annual budget linked to the strategic plan for Campus Life;
  • Maintains appropriate records and correspondence relating to the Dean’s office;
  • Provides direction and intervention for students in crisis and non-crisis, including intervening with mental health staff, providing victim advocacy, and working with staff and students affected by crisis;
  • Serve as a resource to University faculty and staff in addressing student’s disruptive behavior within and outside the classroom;
  • Serves as an active member of various university committees, including the Institutional Effectiveness and Visual Corporate Identity Committee (VCIC), Retention Committee, Business Processes Committee, Emergency Response Team, President’s Advisory Council, and serves as Chair for the Campus Assessment Response & Evaluation Team;
  • As Advisor to the Student Government Association, schedules and directs periodic student forums or residence hall meetings when necessary;
  • Manages Student Government Association election eligibility, campaigning, and verification process;
  • Assists in management of student emergency situations, including contacting parents;
  • Regularly attends activities or events on campus;
  • Serves as a chaperone at major events and activities such as Homecoming, Graduation, etc.;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Knowledge Skills and Abilities
    • Strong fiscal skills in budget management.
    • Demonstrated experience managing groups and peers;
    • Knowledge and awareness of mental health conditions and ability to engage in emergency situations;
    • Strong communicator, especially with colleagues of various backgrounds;
    • Experience working with young people, especially in the areas of formation and discipline;
    • Commitment to the character and personal formation of young people especially integrating the Catholic Faith into a person’s individual life choices;
    • Full adherence and support for the Magisterium of the Catholic Church specifically matters related to faith, morals, and human sexuality;
    • Must understand the stated mission of the University and understand how the promotion and sustaining of a Christian community at the University is an essential component of this mission;
    • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.
    • Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA.
    Required Education
    Master’s Degree.
    Required Work Experience
    • A minimum of ten (10) years of professional experience in Student Affairs.
    • Three (3) years of leadership experience in Student Affairs.
    Preferred Qualifications
    Ph.D. strongly preferred.

    Work Hours
    Monday through Friday 8am to 5pm with extended hours as needed, especially during peak periods, to meet departmental goals.
    Physical Demands
    • Ability to actively engage in events for extended periods of time.
    • Ability to regularly move about campus and event venues to actively engage faculty, staff, and potential/current students, as well as attend meetings on and off campus.
