Under the general guidance of the Community Data Manger, the Data Specialist will work closely with the Illinois Coalition for Higher Education in Prison (IL-CHEP) and the Institute on Public Safety and Social Justice (IPSSJ) staff to support data and evaluation needs for IL-CHEP and IPSSJ. In this role, the Data Specialist will assist with evaluation of correctional programs aimed at addressing needs of incarcerated individuals to improve re-entry outcomes. Ideal candidates will have expertise in program evaluation, research methodology, data collection and analysis and reporting. Ideal candidates will bring a passion for educational equity and restorative justice and a commitment to leveraging higher education for social impact.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, psychology, social sciences, statistics, research methods degree preferred.
  • Minimum two to three years of increasing levels of experience in data collection, data management, analysis, and reporting for varying audiences. Must have taken undergraduate level research methods and statistics courses (introductory and intermediate statistics). Course work in and/or laboratory experience with qualitative and quantitative methods strongly preferred (e.g., survey construction and administration, qualitative interviews, focus groups, etc.).
  • Prior experience with program evaluation (design, implementation, and reporting), relating to criminal justice, public policy or service-based organizations strongly preferred.
  • Experience in data collection and management, and data analytics tools. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and SPSS required. Power BI and Tableau preferred.

K/S/A

  • Proficient and functional knowledge of statistical software (SPSS, STATA, SAS), familiarity with SQL or R preferred.
  • Proficient and functional knowledge of MS Office (Work, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. 
  • Highly effective interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, team setting. Mobility to travel throughout metropolitan Chicago and greater Illinois required.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities: Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assists with program evaluation and data collection, management, analysis for IL-CHEP and CHOICE related programs and projects.
  • Contributes to project designs and implementation of evaluation and outcome measurement and reporting
  • Assists with quantitative and qualitative data collection, including tasks like conducting pre- and post-test evaluations (surveys, interviews, focus groups), data entry and analysis
  • Interprets and analyzes consistent and ad hoc reports as a result of the management of departmental metrics
  • Produces summaries of data for internal and external purposes, not limited to the creation of written reports, one-pagers etc. including written and visual data summaries

Work Environment (Physical Demands):  The usual and customary methods of performing the jobs functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 80% sitting, 10% walking, and 10% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.
