About the Department

The Center for Research Informatics (CRI) is an organization within the Biological Sciences Division (BSD) that provides informatics resources and services to University faculty in alignment with the mission, vision, and values of the acadminc medical center. Four main services comprise the CRI's operations: application development, bioinformatics, research storage and computing, and clinical research data warehousing and business intelligence. Through these service lines, the CRI enables clinical and translational research of the highest scientific merit and advances the state of the art of clinical research informatics. Job Summary

Incumbent will be responsible for managing the daily activities of the team maintaining the ETL environment for the Clinical Research Data Warehousing (CRDW) including all quality control and assurance testing. This includes overseeing data design and the creation of the database architecture and data repositories, ensuring that reporting, modeling, and ETL projects and initiatives are fully supported and run smoothly, implementing new data extractions, transformations, and loads, writing SQL code to incorporate new data sources into data warehouses and affiliated data marts, both local and distributed, and working with existing teams to further development according to existing standards and conventions. This includes data source acquisition and positioning, providing ongoing feedback and support to expand available data sources while improving the team’s understanding of existing data sources, transforming and loading data into data models and platforms, both standardized and unstandardized, and creating and maintaining a growing body of documentation. Finally, this position involves translating technical specifications into SQL code, generating data deliverables, and conducting code review. An ideal candidate will be able to quickly master medical terminology related to the data warehouse, communicate effectively with cross-fucntional teams and clients, and write SQL queries which optimize the organization of data deliverables and develop and maintain change management procedures. Incumbent will be responsible for delivering data securely, working cross-functionally across the CRI and greater university, and will be responsible for managing a small team of junior ETL developers. Incumbent may be partially or wholly supported by partnerships with Departments, Sections, and other Research Units. The position operates within a federal recharge center.


  • Understands business requirements and needs of business owners and assist with defining data elements and data structure that the team should leverage to enable analytics capabilities.

  • Gather and analyze healthcare and other related data to identify and interpret trends in support of data requests, business cases, and proposed projects.

  • Design, construct, test, and maintain data warehouse and related functionality including extraction and transformation of data using SSIS.

  • Design, develop, and test business intelligence outputs (including visualization) to ensure useful and insightful information using software including R, Tableau, and/or Excel to support research and quality improvement initiatives.

  • Test and validate data with the purpose of understanding and making conclusions to support decision-making processes.

  • Manage a variety of information systems and data files, including large and complex files: analyzing file structure, using and creating file layouts, transforming raw data into finished products.

  • Monitor for timely and accurate completion of select datasets.

  • Participate in strategic initiatives to enhance data management and reporting to support research and quality improvement initiatives.

  • Collaborate closely with a cross-functional team of Data Scientists, Project.

  • Managers, and Developers to ensure high-quality data delivery to faculty.

  • Proactively identify issues and opportunities to improve data systems and related policies as an aspect of data governance.

  • Manage and direct junior ETL developers.

  • Leads in the development of new systems, features, and tools. Solves complex problems and identifies opportunities for technical improvement and performance optimization. Reviews and tests code to ensure appropriate standards are met.

  • Utilizes in-depth technical knowledge of existing and emerging technologies, including public cloud offerings from Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud.

  • Acts as a technical consultant and resource for faculty research, teaching, and/or administrative projects.

  • Leads or coordinates teams or projects for activities relating to software support and/or development.

  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications


Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 7+ years of work experience in a related job discipline.



Preferred Qualifications


  • Bachelor's or Master's.


  • Understanding of various common data models (OMOP, PCORnet).

  • 7 years experience with ETL tools.

  • 7 years experience with SQL, python, Java, Tableau.

  • Understanding of research methodology and healthcare terminology.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Clarity.

Preferred Competencies

  • High level of problem-solving and decision-making skills.

  • Knowledge of healthcare data including ICD-9, ICD-10, and CPT.

  • Expert in SQL and Excel.

  • Proficiency in relational databases with experience designing transformations, mappings, and working with reference table.

  • Ability to translate technical information to non-technical audiences.

  • Critical thinking and multi-tasking skills with the ability to manage multiple projects.

  • Time management skills.

  • Proficiency in creating technical specifications, business cases, and other development-related documentation. 

  • Experience in other analytic platforms including R, Stata, Python, SAS.

  • Experience with business intelligence and visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, etc.

  • Experience investigating data issues and working with a cross-functional team for problem resolution.
