Job Summary

This is a contract role for four months.

Works on database development and research data reporting assignments that are of limited diversity in scope. Exercises judgment within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

The Data Manager (DM) will support a cross-sectional couple’s study about motivations to use safer conception methods among HIV-affected couples in western, Kenya.

The DM will assist in planning, coordinating, and oversee data systems for the research study by developing a couple’s database for survey results, testing the database, fixing database problems following pilot-testing and as they arise, monitoring study data during data collection, conducting quality assurance, and preparing recruitment reports.

This position involves working with a variety of UCSF and non-UCSF faculty and staff to develop a data capture system. Study databases will be created and maintained in the UCSF secure research environment using RED-CAP. The DM will oversee database development, data management and storage, develop programming to generate progress and monitoring reports and conduct data management and quality assurance and provide technical assistance to research staff related to data entry and processing.

Department Description

The Department of Community Health Systems promotes and sustains health in the community and workplace, with particular emphasis on culturally diverse and high-risk populations.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Working knowledge of research function.
  • Working skills in statistical analysis, systems programming, database design and data security measures.
  • Working skills in analysis and consultation.
  • Skills to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing.
  • Technical skill in database development and management
  •  Minimum of one year of related experience
  • Demonstrated ability to write up methods and results sections for publications
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with a wide range of team members including faculty investigators, Kenyan collaborators and research assistants
  • Demonstrated history of excellent attendance, reliability, and time management skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in public health, computer science, or social sciences with statistical training
  • Proficient in at least one or more of these languages/programs: Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel, Stata, SAS (>4 year experience using Stata SAS or R)
  • Proficient in REDCap programming: database development and management
  • Has broad training in public health research, with specific knowledge of database construction and management, epidemiologic methods, and statistical analysis
  • Demonstrated ability to work with staff from diverse cultural backgrounds and countries outside the US
