Position Summary
The Data Analyst will lead the data management and analysis for the Social Policy Institute (SPI) at Washington University in St. Louis. SPI is dedicated to addressing pressing social issues through transdisciplinary empirical research, dissemination of evidence-informed policy, and training.
This position will oversee all project data operations (advising on new initiatives; monitoring, cleaning, analyzing and archiving several large and diverse data sets; interpreting findings; preparing publications and presentations; etc.) on multiple short and long-term projects related to improving household financial security. In particular, this position will support SPI’s guaranteed basic income initiatives, workforce benefits expansion, and community-engaged research, but may also have opportunities to work on other SPI initiatives depending on interest and need.


Job Description

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Designs and conducts statistical analyses using standard statistical programs.
  • Interprets and explains research findings and project outcomes both orally and in writing.
  • Independently designs and manages research initiatives.
  • Provides expert advice on research design, sampling, data collection instruments, data quality, data analyses, and other support to SPI’s research teams.
  • Effectively represents the organization in a variety of academic and policy settings.
  • Manages large, complex data sets with excellent documentation, for use by multiple parties.

Working Conditions

  • Work is conducted in Hillman Hall.
  • Occasional travel to meeting and conferences.
  • Physical requirements involve heavy interaction with a computer, people and manuals/codebooks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in related field with research experience in social policy fields (e.g. financial security, housing, health, etc.).
  • Four years working on research projects conducting quantitative research.
  • Excellent analytic skills and two years of experience using statistical software such as SPSS, SAS, Stata, R, or Python.
  • Ability to manage several large scale and complex data sets.
  • Effective communication in English, both orally and in writing, demonstrated by presentations at research or policy conferences, and authorship in peer-reviewed social science journals.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of faculty and staff of varying degrees of technical sophistication.
  • Ability to balance competing demands from multiple projects.


The Data Analyst should have experience in applied policy or economic research, including:

  • Econometric modeling or other rigorous methodological approaches (e.g., spatial analysis, psychometrics, etc.)
  • Research design and sampling
  • Measurement and questionnaire design
  • Data collection and data quality control and cleaning
  • Data analysis and reporting


Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and 4 years’ related work experience or Master’s degree in math, statistics, economics computer science, psychology, social work or related field plus two years’ related work experience.

Salary Range
$64,700.00 - $110,500.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
