Job Description Summary

The Institute for Immunology and Immune Health (I3H) at the University of Pennsylvania is looking to add a highly motivated Resource Technologist with experience in immunology to our team. The goal of the Immune Health group is to characterize features of patients' immune systems that can influence decisions about diagnosis, treatment, and/or prevention for a range of health conditions. Our mission is not only to make scientific discoveries, but also to integrate these findings into patient medical records so that they can have a more immediate impact on clinical treatment.I3H combines the brilliance and innovation of UPenn’s Immunology and UPHS’ first mover position in immune-centric clinical therapy. A Resource Technologist will help us scale up our efforts to evaluate clinical samples. He or she will be responsible for data collection, sample processing, and routine maintenance of mass cytometry and flow cytometer instruments. We are looking for highly motivated people with prior experience handling human samples in a lab setting and flow cytometry. Aside from receiving training in mass cytometry and spectral flow cytometry, qualified applicants will also get guidance in basic data analysis and familiarity with scientific literature. Job Description

The candidate will be responsible for the tasks listed below:

• Process samples (Human blood, tissues etc.), isolation of PBMC, plasma and serum.

• Cryopreservation of samples and biospecimen inventory management.

• Prepare human clinical samples for high-dimensional phenotypic and functional analysis of single cells using mass cytometry (CyTOF) and spectral flow cytometry instruments.

• Operate a CyTOF XT, Cytek Aurora, BD Symphony instrument for sample acquisition and perform daily instrument calibration and QC. 

• Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting for equipment, and when required, interface with technical support for repairs.

• Maintain an inventory of reagents, including metals and metal-conjugated antibodies, and perform antibody-metal conjugations if no commercial alternatives are available.

• Ensure proper data management and backup and assist in data analysis. 

• Follow established standard procedures, with attention to detail.

• Prepare/develop SOPs and regulatory documents.

• Possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability and eagerness to work in a team setting. 

• Train new users in sample acquisition as necessary.

• Ability to work flexible hours during the week.

Position contingent on funding.

Qualifications

· Bachelor’s in Biological Sciences, Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field, and 3-5 years work experience in a laboratory setting or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Masters degree preferred.

Experience handling human samples, isolating PBMCs, and at least one year experience working with cytometry instruments required, or equivalent combination of education and experience required.  Additionally, attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and ability to work flexibly and collaboratively in a team environment are required.
