Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno is recruiting for a Custodial Supervisor 2 for the Facilities Maintenance Services Department.  This position is responsible for supervising, scheduling, and overseeing daily cleaning activities for the department’s custodial employees.

Duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Establish priorities and develop work assignments to ensure that all cleaning requirements are met in an efficient manner;

  • Develop work schedules and make necessary revisions; adjust assignments when temporary staffing shortages occur to ensure consistency of service;

  • Monitor activities and conduct inspections daily;

  • Evaluate cleanliness of assigned square footage;

  • Provide feedback for continuous improvement;

  • Observe and document general conditions of buildings, floors, carpets, custodial equipment and supplies to provide feedback to the Assistant Director of Building Services;

  • Assess training needs and conduct trainings as needed for Custodial staff;

  • Ensure Custodial staff is informed of the most current cleaning techniques, methods, responsibilities, and hazardous materials;

  • Develop work performance standards and conduct performance reviews;

  • Delegate tasks and responsibilities;

  • Participate in new hire selection;

  • Observe and report unusual activity;

  • Responsible for internal pest control;

  • Oversee, administer, and make the necessary updates to the Safety Data Sheets located in all buildings;

  • Monitor and manage the custodial closet inventory in buildings; submit supply orders and ensure accurate reporting and proper use;

  • Implement and monitor program activities by planning and organizing the unit’s routine, project and emergency work; and

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • This position requires graduation from high school or equivalent education and three (3) years of progressively responsible custodial and buildings maintenance experience at a multi-building facility. One (1) year of the experience must have been in a supervisory capacity which involved training and providing work direction to custodial workers; assigning and evaluating work; and assisting in preparing bid specifications for the procurement of equipment, materials and chemicals; OR

  • One (1) year of experience as a Custodial Supervisor I in Nevada State service; OR

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience as described above

Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. 

A valid Class “C” driver’s license or higher operator’s license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.

Physical Demands

This position requires walking or standing to a significant degree and pushing and/or pulling; exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

This job requires working with and around hazardous building material containing asbestos and solvents; increased exposure to germs; frequent use of ladders and stairs; and exposure to hot and cold temperatures when working outside.

This position requires the ability to see, hear, and communicate through speech.

  • Candidates with the ability to facilitate a conflict resolution process with employees are encouraged to apply.

  • Candidates with experience in operating and maintaining industrial-type of cleaning equipment are encouraged to apply.

  • Candidates with strong written and verbal communication skills including cross-department collaboration are encouraged to apply.

Schedule

The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday from 6:00 am to 2:30 pm; this is subject to change based on organizational needs. This position may be able to elect an alternative work schedule after training has been successfully completed.

This position is part of the Facilities Services Weather Essential Personnel and may be required to report to work for their regularly scheduled shift without any phone/cell phone notification; and is subject to a variable workweek schedule.

This position is designated as Essential Personnel. In the event of a campus emergency, special event, closure to maintain campus safety or building operations, this position may be required to work outside of regularly scheduled hours.

Compensation Grade

Grade 28

In classified service, salary is in Grade and Step. The Step is determined based on the Nevada Administrative Code. Salary placement above a Step 01 at initial appointment is determined based on the recruitment, the candidate’s qualifications, internal equity and budgets. A request to accelerate salary must be approved by Human Resources and abide by the Nevada Administrative Code.

2)Describe your experience, including number of years, with the following:  a) developing and maintaining custodial budgets, policies, and procedures; b) maintaining a custodial/maintenance supply inventory and related hazardous material documentation.

3) Describe your formal training/education related to: a) OSHA or other safety training in janitorial or maintenance procedures; b) formal trades (carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, Electrical).  Certificates of completion or training documentation must be attached to the application.

4) Describe your experience, including number of years, supervising custodial and/or maintenance staff including training, work assignment and review/inspection, performance evaluations, and discipline.

5) Describe your experience, including number of years, coordinating the custodial and logistical activities for events such as academic speakers, orientations, graduation ceremonies, concerts, plays, sporting events, etc.
