General Description / Primary Purpose
The University of North Florida’s Department of Art, Art History, and Design invites applications for the position of Curator of University Galleries/Instructor (12-month renewable contract) beginning in Fall 2024.
About UNF and the Department of Art, Art History, and Design:
The University of North Florida’s Department of Art, Art History and Design is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). The department offers three major programs of study in Art History, Graphic Design and Digital Media, and Fine Arts, with concentrations in Ceramics, Painting/Drawing, Printmaking, Photography, and Sculpture. The department partners with the Museum of Contemporary Art in downtown Jacksonville, a cultural institute of UNF, to enhance learning, exhibition, and research opportunities for students, faculty, and staff. In addition, the department maintains a diverse permanent collection for teaching of approximately 500 works.

Essential Duties

Job Function
The responsibilities of the position include managing UNF’s three unique university gallery spaces, including two campus galleries (the UNF Gallery of Art and the Lufrano Intercultural Gallery) and the UNF Gallery at MOCA Jacksonville.
The UNF Gallery of Art serves students, faculty, and staff by exhibiting works that support the educational mission of the department and the university. The Lufrano Gallery focuses on exhibition of works that offer perspectives on global, intercultural, and social themes. The UNF Gallery at MOCA serves as a space for curatorial research and exhibitions that contribute to the department and museum’s shared mission for contemporary art. The Curator of University Galleries will also help to coordinate the Cynthia and Walter R. Graham, Jr., M.D. Student Art Gallery, a faculty-curated space in the Thomas G. Carpenter Library showcasing student work. The Curator of University Galleries position is hands-on, with responsibility for all aspects of exhibitions in the two on-campus galleries, including receiving, unpacking, condition reporting, installing, de-installing, and packing, marketing and promotion, signage, etc.
The successful candidate will hold an appointment as Instructor in the Department of Art, Art History, and Design, with a teaching load of two courses annually in the fields of contemporary art history and gallery/curatorial practice, making best curricular use of MOCA Jacksonville and the university galleries. Course schedule is determined by departmental needs in consultation with the department chair.
The Curator of University Galleries is also a vital part of the curatorial team at the Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville, working with the Senior Curator and other staff to develop and coordinate a curatorial agenda across the university galleries that serves the needs and interests of students, faculty, MOCA, and the public. The position serves in this capacity as an essential liaison between UNF and MOCA to facilitate broader university engagement with the museum and its programs.
