About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants' Amherst, MA office is looking for Cultural Resources Technicians to support the 2024 Field Season (mid-April to late-November). This position will offer the opportunity to participate in projects related to renewable energy, transmission, transportation, and land development across New England.This position is a temporary, hourly position which includes housing and per diem. There is the potential to be eligible for full-time, hourly employment, with benefits and possible travel to other locations/offices during the winter months.

What you will accomplish

  • Conduct archaeological fieldwork including monitoring and Phase I and II testing.
  • Assist with mapping responsibilities in the field, including collection of GPS data using Trimble units and Tablets (knowledge of TerrSync, ArcPad, and ArcGIS Collector beneficial).

Skill Requirements:

  • Current valid driver's license and the ability to safely operate a 4wd vehicle on rugged, backcountry roads required
  • Ability to travel to a location, walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, often at high altitudes, and ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds is required

Education and Experience:


  • A Bachelor's Degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field or six (6) months field experience with a range of field methodologies, including survey, testing, excavation, and monitoring required
  • An accredited Field School Certification is preferred
  • Experience with a wide range of field methodologies, including archaeological survey, testing, excavation, methodology and monitoring preferred.

An employee in this Amherst-based position can expect a hourly rate of $18.75-$24.75/hour. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law.
