Summary of Job Duties:

The Counseling Services (CS) Counselor position is responsible for the delivery and documentation of personal mental health counseling for individuals and groups of current UA Little Rock students. The focus is on brief, short-term interactions and interventions to help individuals determine the most appropriate life course and best strategy to achieve personal and educational goals. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Qualifications:

Required Education and/or Experience:

  • Master’s degree or higher in the clinical mental health field;

  • Eligible for Arkansas licensure as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker or Licensed Professional Counselor;

  • Minimum 2 years of counseling experience in a clinical setting.

Preferred Education and/or Experience:

  • A generalist orientation and emphasis on dealing with depression, anxiety, and stress issues is strongly preferred;

  • Experience working in a college/university counseling center.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide mental health and psychological counseling to enrolled undergraduate and graduate students;

  • Facilitate short-term individual and group counseling sessions to assist students to address educational and personal issues and improve coping skills;

  • Demonstrate knowledge of counseling theories, interventions, and techniques;

  • Compose accurate and timely electronic medical record (EMR) case notes documenting counseling sessions and/or client interactions;

  • Handle confidential information professionally and with discretion;

  • Evaluate crisis situations and take appropriate action to ensure client safety and well-being;

  • Demonstrate provision of counseling services with diverse populations;

  • Develop and conduct workshops, presentations, and trainings to campus groups on issues and topics influencing and impacting educational and personal development and success;

  • Provide therapeutic interactions in an ethical manner;

  • Assist with planning and facilitation of CS-sponsored campus-wide programming and interventions;

  • Participate in the development and execution of UA Little Rock and CS strategic plans;

  • Gather information on available campus and community service resources along with data on student mental health needs;

  • Provide support and feedback to clinical interns associated with CS;

  • Proficient in Therapy Notes EMR;

  • Participate in on- and off-campus events and functions that support the university, division, and departmental missions;

  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge and skill in using Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction as a therapeutic technique;

  • Ability to work in a diverse and dynamic environment;

  • Ability to generate reports incorporating elementary statistics;

  • Ability to work collaboratively or independently with common goals as a part of a team;

  • Ability to make sound judgments, problem-solve, and appropriately assist students with their concerns;

  • Ability to communicate effectively through written, oral, and/or electronic means;

  • Ability to use current technology to facilitate marketing and provision of counseling services;

  • Active pursuit of knowledge and expertise to improve the quality of mental health services provided to UA Little Rock students;

  • Ability to work effectively in a college counseling center setting; 

  • Knowledge of student development theory.
