Job Description:

Alfred State College is seeking a dynamic Coordinator of Tutoring and Academic Supports to work in the Student Success area as part of an integrated team. The Coordinator will work with students, faculty, and other professional staff to promote the academic success of Alfred State students. The Coordinator will also work closely with academic departments in developing, organizing, and implementing student academic supports, with a focus on courses with high DFW rates and/or courses that result in progression bottlenecks in the curriculum. Student Academic Supports include: 1:1 professional and peer tutoring for all levels of students, group tutoring, small workshops, Student Instruction, and Structured Learning. This position would also include managing the tutoring software and recruiting, hiring, and overseeing student tutors. The position would also require the Coordinator to track results and perform assessment of the student academic supports. This is an 11-month position that may require evening hours, depending on student needs.  

The successful candidate will: 

  • Work Directly with Students seeking academic support: 
  • Serve as a centrally located point of contact for students and make and respond to referrals for peer tutoring, individual counseling, supplemental instruction, and study skills workshops. 
  • Teach and/or co-teach Structured Learning courses, when appropriate.  
  • Develop and distribute teaching materials to supplement classroom lessons, including study guides. 
  • Assist students in basic technology skills including the portal, email, file saving, MyLearning (LMS), Bannerweb, and other campus software systems. 
  • Provide professional tutoring to all levels of students one-on-one, in small groups, and small workshops, including offering some evening hours.  
  • Teach skills to improve academic performance, including study strategies, note-taking skills, and approaches to answering test questions. 
  • Instruct students both in person and over video. 
  • Partner with Academic Departments on Tutoring and Academic Support Needs: 
  • Work with academic departments to develop, schedule, staff, and deliver Structured Learning courses and to track student outcomes. 
  • Work with academic departments to set up Supplemental Instruction sessions.  
  • Work with departments to recruit and train student tutors and process paperwork/pay. 
  • Work with Math and English Departments to aid in staffing student tutors for Writing Center and Math lab. 
  • Manage Administrative & Assessment Aspects related to Academic Tutoring & Support Functions 
  • Recruit and train student tutors and set session times. 
  • Track and offer feedback on student progress to professors, advisors, and success coaches, where appropriate 
  • Manage the tutoring software and training students on use.  
  • Develop, prepare, and monitor tutor budget. 
  • Conduct assessment, data collection, analyses, prepare reports, and conduct self-directed annual assessment of student success metrics related to tutoring and student academic supports. 
  • Organize and maintain all statistical data. 
  • Provide necessary reports to Associate Dean when requested. 
  • Assist in creation of tutoring forms and reports. 
  • Assist in data collection and analysis for Alfred State program learning outcomes. 
  • Participate in regional, state, and national advising professional development professional development, college committees, and other projects as assigned.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's degree  
  • Experience in tutoring or teaching math, science, computer science, or related fields 
  • Demonstrating academic best practices for math, science, computer science or related subjects and assignments, including research, and writing tactics 
  • Ability to effectively and professionally interact and communicate, both orally and in writing, with a diverse community of students, faculty, staff, and visitors 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to clearly explain challenging concepts, provide instructions, and deliver feedback 
  • Experience working with diverse and at-risk populations. 
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends, as needed  
  • Ability to motivate and encourage students to improve their academic performance using effective goal-setting strategies 
  • Creativity and flexibility in order to personalize learning approach for individual students 
  • Patience and compassion for students as they develop skills and improve their performance 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Master's degree in Math, Science, Computer Science, or related field 
  • Certification from the National Tutoring Association, American Tutoring Association, Association for the Coaching and Tutoring Profession or the College Reading and Learning Association 
  • ESL and ELL support experience 
  • Past experience in data collection, analysis, and assessment 
  • Broad higher education knowledge including use of effective student success strategies 
  • Higher education teaching experience 
  • Experience with D2L or other LMS, Excel, Starfish, Banner, and Degree-Works

The salary range for this position begins at $48,000 and is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
